SPORE
« on: September 08, 2008, 05:38:11 AM »

Well, there's one weekend wasted.

I bought the game Friday, and absolutely fell in love. Starting as a little single-cell brainless thing, to guide your little critter to sentience, then civilization. If you've already messed with the Creature Creator, there are several different types of creators bundled with the full game, including cars, ships, planes, and spaceships. Eventually, your little race becomes galactically dominant, sending out it's DNA in the form of an asteroid, barreling through space, just waiting for another lifeless little planet to start all over.

One of my bosses got it this weekend and won't shut up about how great it is. Seems to be a common theme.

It's kinda looking like SPORE is a DRM crapfest.

I'll pass, thanks.

I asked my coworker about this and he says a lot of the DRM was heavily modified\removed by the time it actually went out into production. He didn't experience any of what they're bitching about.

Okay, truth be told, mine is pirated ( :-o). It plays just fine, up 'til the Tribal Stage, where it locks up at the Tribal Outfitter. It really sucks, 'cause I'm only experiencing half the game.

My roomate's laptop hasn't left his side for days.

He actually went to Walmart at midnight thinking they were going to have the game on the shelves at 12:00am sharp. I think he was the only one.

That's about where I stand as well. I've heard iffy things about it, but I'll have to give it a try for myself and see.

I purchased this, only to suffer intolerable buyer's remorse before even leaving the store. I remembered how terrible I was at SimCity, and wondered if it was at all irresponsible, on an ethical level, to subject these pitiable things to my malevolent whims without first knowing what I was getting into. I returned it at the customer service desk before I left, and haven't looked back yet. They were pretty pissed.

Can anyone tell me more about the final stages of the game? Tribal, civilization, and space stages all seem beyond my areas of expertise. The closest I come to this kind of management is during real-time strategy games, but I doubt micromanaging Firebats has really equipped me for this.

Edit: I was gifted Spore the day after posting this, and I adore it. The more advanced stages are much more akin to a layman's version of Starcraft than to Simcity, so my aggressive Torquemada-esque methods of engagement were completely solvent. Of course, there are other avenues to success, but I have yet to find one that sates my lust for conquest. I recommend this game highly.
