Washington wants 10,000 web surfers

I don't know if I'd do this, but the government is looking for 10,000 volunteers to surf the web and be part of a study to determine if internet connections are as fast as advertised.  This story has a link in it for applying if you're interested.

I don't know about participating in a study group like this.  Does the Government really care if we are getting 10 meg down -vs- 9.78 meg down?  I can't really see them caring.  There must be an underlying motive, as is with just about anything with the Government.

In any case, I try not to be a lab rat.  I prefer to be the guy in the lab coat poking the rat.

This is bizarre , why would the government care on exact up/down speeds of internet, are they trying to crack down perhaps on false advertising of the telecomm companies, b/c basic dsl is far from impressive.
