Donnie Darko Question
« on: November 20, 2010, 10:04:09 AM »

So I watched Donnie Darko again last night.  Then I read online what actually happened and blah blah blah but didn't find the answer to one question.

If Donnie was the living receiver and brought the artifact through the time vortex (telekinetically ripped the engine off the plane and brought it down on himself)...wouldn't his sister and mother have died in that plane crash?

Who says the plane crashed?  Most multi-engine planes don't need more than a single engine to land safely.  Might be a rough ride, depending on what happened to the other engine(s) but it can be done...

Well, I never looked it up online as I like my own ideas about the movie. But anyway, my idea is Donnie dying by being crushed by the jet engine changed the timeline in a way that kept his mother and sister from going on that flight. Whatever happened to the rest of the plane after the engine was ripped off doesn't really matter.

Think of it this way. The only reason Donnie's mother went on the trip in the first place was because Ms. Farmer needed someone else to chaperon. This is because Ms. Farmer had to go to Jim Cunningham's arraignment. Cunningham would never have been caught with illegal pornography if Donnie had never burned down his house. Therefore, since Donnie can't burn down Cunningham's house (because Donnie is dead), then Ms. Farmer could still theoretically be able to go on the trip with the girls.

That is, of course, if Samantha still continues to dance in the group despite her brother's death.

Those both make lots of sense, thank you.

BTW Novice, Cunningham actually killed himself 10 days after Donnie died.  I guess that would be Oct 12?  It wasn't in the movie though.

Very good, thank you.
