Everyone likes free stuff, right?

I have been able to work out a deal with Geeks.com in which they will give me some stuff to give away to you guys several times a year.

"Great!" I thought. Then I realized, I have no idea how the hell I am going to give away this stuff to you guys. So this is where you all come in. I want you guys to come up with some interesting contest ideas for these prizes/give aways and post them here in this thread for discussion.

Who knows, maybe our first forum contest will be to see who comes up with the best contest idea.

T-shirt/merchandise contest. Contestants submit images to be used on official gotthegeek/geekforum merchandise.

Take the winning entry and setup a contributor’s gallery at zazzle. Winner gets the geeks.com prize, members will be able to buy the stuff, and you can make up to 17% on each sale.

Entries should meet zazzle’s recommended image size, format, etc to qualify.

(I've never used zazzle, but I've heard they are far better than cafepress.)

As the new number 2, I just must say that you sir have some brilliant ideas, Millifist. I wonder if Demo still has his HN store. I never got around to buying a shirt, and now that it's dead, those will be collectors' items.

I'm not good at this stuff usually, but these are the online community contests I've come across:

caption contests
photoshop contests
fics/recs
essays

these are the basics I figure. These can work with any topic, and usually are combined so that more people with different talents can all participate. This can also correspond with t-shirt contests, etc.

Thanks for the ideas so far, guys.

I had a logo competition in mind as the first contest, actually. I planned on using the logo to not only put on the forums, but also put on t-shirts and other things and sell them and give them out along with prizes.

And like Milifist said, I'd like to have different types of contests this way people who are artistically challenged like me can have a shot at winning some cool stuff.

No because everyone would win that one. All they would have to do to win would be to say "Oh, well, I hypothesize that there is a superluminal particle that we have not discovered, and I would give it the name SoupB Andit31." or whatever.

Update 30 seconds later: Although of course, tachyon is a blanet term that would, by definition, encompass any just about any superluminal particles...whatever.

I hypothesize that superluminal particles are sentient, should be under the protection of PETA, SPCA, and any applicable NATO and UN treaties as well, and that they should be able to choose their own names rather than stand towards your racism.

I hypothesize that (due to causality violations) any and all superluminal particles should logically exist before being created created (!) and are thus non-sentient, as this would put them well within the legal abortion age (see Roe v Wade).

This means that, by virtue of their questionable age, superluminal particles are NOT sentient (legally speaking anyway).

Stop being a fundie relic, tachyons hold the key to solving just about any problem that starship captains will face in the 24th century! You keep your archaic religious viewpoint to yourself, I only believe in cold, hard, empirical science, sir!

How about submitting a geekery banner? I'm sure Chris could actually use some of the entries. On the other hand, I guess not everyone is able to make them so it's perhaps not the best suggestion.

I kind of like that idea... I think people could get pretty creative with what they come up with. Though, I don't know what Detta will think about it.

The message board feature works fine as long as the site admin puts the submitted .bmp files on the server.
