Well it looks like CG is moving the HN forums back over to another server.  So get ready for the influx of refugee's again.  Thanks Chris for the use of the bandwidth.  Perhaps this will be the last time.  Although many of us have been visiting/posting since we found this island in the sea of the intraweb.

Ah, the invasion's not so bad.

Of course, I'm a traveller between both on a fairly regular basis, so maybe it doesn't bother me as much.

So yeah, I'm pissed.  My DSL is finally working again, and I've got an hour to kill before the boyfriend gets here, so I figure I'd get my HN on.  But no, I get kicked in the face by the white screen of death.

I'm so glad The Geekery is here.  Thank you Chris and Jon.  Thank you Geekery.

Yeah, neither did I.  Looking at post counts though, I guess some people just talk more than others.

Damn that was a fast turnaround.  It's back up and it looks like Detta and I were the only influx there was.  Lost all the posts for the last thirty days but it does seem rather quick, and now the server is CG's.

Hell Lacerda I can't even say that much less be looking for it.

Hoober I don't believe you've been banned.  CG had to move to a new server (his own this time) and all threads and things from the last 30 days were lost.  Including newbie sign ups.  Go back over and sign up again.  Then perhaps you can do something to get banned for.  Heheh.

Seriously it ain't you.

Yup yup.  Sorry ho0ber, but you're going to have to register again... looks like your account (as well as any others that were made in December) was wiped out.

*bump*

Say... is anyone else getting a "cannot find server" or "page cannot be displayed" when trying to get to HN this morning?

I think the Greek one's server is down.  :(

Yep.
First I thought it was a problem with the Konqueror browser I was using, but Mozilla won't work either. It's down.

I thought Lacerda broke it when he updated the main page last night.  I guess that's not it, huh?   :)

Who knows? Maybe some 'real' hackers took exception to what appeared to be a blatant horn-tooting on our part.

Heh. I would agree.
It doesn't seem to understand simple HTML forms and when you try to log in to, say, e-mail or forums, instead of it logging you in by just pressing enter it's flawed so that you end up having to click the stupid button that says "Log in". Who has the energy or time to do that!?!

Alas, I had to tolerate it with SuSE Linux 8.1(because it came with it) until I could install an alternative.

Cannot be found for me, either. Looks like he was better off on a shared server than a dedicated server. Ever since he made that move, the place has been shakey. Only if we could turn back time... oh wait, we can.

I had very similar experiences with it when I first tried using it in KDE in Red Hat last year.

It seems to have pretty major problems with tables at times too.

I hate to say it, but security flaws aside, Internet Explorer is still one of the better browsers out there (in Windoze, anyway).

I really laugh when anti-IE people whine "but it's not w3c compliant!", when the browsers they use have problems with basic things like tables and tags like </I> and <P> and </P>.

Nothing quite like going to a webpage and seeing the entire thing in italics because the browser you're using doesn't understand that </I> is supposed to mean "italics STOP here".

Opera was pretty good, except for the whole thing about Java Script and having to go through the whole process of getting it to work.

You know, I haven't had any problems with Opera, except that I dislike how it interprets certain things.

HN, for instance, tends to look all screwed up in Opera sometimes.  It doesn't wrap text correctly, so the threads can look fucked at times.

HN does seem to load a bit faster in Opera than in other browsers, however.

Sometimes? Man, that is messed up then. It's worse than all the time because then you know the program really is F'ed up.

About browsers, I finally got fed up with IE's crashes every five minutes, and of Netscape's interminable load times, and got Mozilla. So far, I'm impressed-- stable, fast, and no picture limitations (except for loading a lot of them all at once gets a bit slow). Nice!

Wow...  Cold up here...

anyway, yeah, i'll have to go sign back up and see how things go.  But that means that i'm that much further from having my brak avatar.. :(.  Oh well, at least the forums will be back up.

But yeah, anyone here from New England and feeling the extreme snot-freezing action out there recently?
