Title: How 'bout that Pacifism, eh?
Post by: Agent_Tachyon on June 28, 2007, 12:33:07 PM
I've recently been thinking a lot about Pacifism, and it seems to make a lot of sense in some situations, but not others. For example, it's pretty damn cool how Ghandi beat the British, but I can't help but think that if he was up against, say Nazi Germany, they'd have just wasted him and all his followers and gone right on through.

I don't know, it sure doesn't do much for my Civ4 game.  :w:

That's not when the problem starts, thats when your beliefs are put to the test.

Having your beliefs put to a test can be the beginning of a big problem.

Hitler would have bulldozed Ghandi.

Ghandi didn't "beat" the Brit's per se, public opinion and potential em-bare-ass-ment along with the growing tactical difficulties of maintaining the "Empire" frustrated them. Bowing out was the only intelligent option.

OMG STFU

YUO = FAGG0RTZ

My avatar shows how utterly manly I am. Boxing, now there is a real sport! Two shirtless sweaty men in silk shorts fighting over a belt and a purse. None of that sissyass football crap for me.

Definition (Google it, I dare you!)

Several types of belief systems of principled rejection of violence. Pacifism is distinct from the technique of nonviolent action, which is usually applied as a practical way to act by people who are not pacifists. Pacifist belief systems, at a minimum, reject participation in all international or civil wars, or violent revolutions. Pacifists may support nonviolent struggle, or may oppose it on ethical grounds as too conflictual.

I do prefer "pacifist" to "coward," so yeah, I'm a pacifist.

I am a pacifist. All the time. I will give someone an intellectual thrashing but physical violence is beneath me.  Still a civil protest rally against a bad cause is quite fun.

I appreciate the post, but the thread was a lil' old. I'm undecided on if I classify this as necromancy or not, but try not to raise posts that have been dead for more then a month.

Thanks.

Translation: I don't know the first thing about self defense and would get my ass handed to me if I ever took a swing at somebody, so I'll just take the high road and say I'm so much better than them then post on the internet about how I totally whipped his ass with my nth dregree black belt powers.

Sorry about the Necromancy. You know the thing about trolling is that it implies that the person trolling is a troll. I can't think of a better name for someone who insults strangers because of their morals and implies that their morals are a result of physical deficiency. Oh and one more thing: Only say that I am better then people when I am better then them. Please do not prove to me that I am better then you.

I'm going to be the farthest away from the Pacific next week that I've been since Boston back in December of '05.  Then in September I'll be even farther.  But I'll be the closest I've ever been to the Gulf of Mexico.

Congratulations for knowing what a troll is, I guess. You have certainly proved your mental agility! Nothing gets by you.

Oh and one more thing: Only say that I am better then people when I am better then them. Please do not prove to me that I am better then you.

Is this an example of the fierce "intellectual thrashing" of yours that you boast of so proudly? If so, please stop. I simply cannot handle such a thrashing of this magnitude. By the way, I'm sure an intellectual titan such of yourself knows the difference between 'then' and 'than' and was just being super ironic, right? Whoops! I guess I've proven that I'm better than you.

Needless flaming ITT. The trifecta is complete.

On the matter of my grammatical error I am afraid that I did not look to carefully at what changes I was making when my spell checker caught a typo. I would, or course, have given you a sounder thrashing if you had said anything even remotely intellectual. However all you have proven yourself to be is rude and boorish.   Your need to insult random people for know reason would seem to be the result of deeper mental issues. Possibly you fear that you are inferior. Because of this I take comfort in the fact that no remark you make could possibly cause me any harm (Why would I care about what some philistine says online?) and my remarks have the potential to hurt you quite deeply. It would seem to me that you are quite doomed and it would be better for you to cut your losses and withdraw. I also suggest therapy.

Well there was that one movie where a guy with neon crazy hacker typing gloves went and killed people who pissed him off in chat rooms or something like that...

Maybe it was just a fond dream of mine.

Your attacks on my grammar show that my point is unassailable. I came to this forum hopping to be able to have many intelligent conversations. I see now that that is impossible. So I take my leave of this forum that is so undeserving of the title Geek. Beam me up Scotty. I'm reading no intelligent life here.

If your 'point' was that you are an idiot with a superiority complex and can't handle criticism, then yes, your point is unassailable. Take your ball and go home, but be sure to insult everybody as you leave, as that is precisely what a paragon of intellectual maturity like yourself should naturally do. "I'm just better than all of you and you are all so dumb and I'm so brilliant and I'm leaving because you're so dumb." So my original assessment of you was correct: You're nothing more than a coward who probably gets his ass beat on a regular basis and has no interest in actually defending himself.

Thanks for proving my point.

Now then, the time has come to reveal why I was such a dick to this guy. I have a rather unpopular opinion on the subject of pacifism. I see it as being rarely effective against making Bad People stop doing Bad Things to you. In this case, I was the Bad Person doing Bad Things to Mankoi. He didn't fight back, or at least didn't put very much effort into fighting back, basically calling me a big meanie then running away. Had he bothered to actually put some effort into fighting back, I would have stopped and possibly apologized. Pacifism got him nowhere. Wasn't that a fun little experiment?

Tonight on It's the Mind...

You've just triggered a series of train-of-thought wrecks in my mind that will ultimately leave me sad and alone in a corner, hugging myself and repeatedly whispering, "Number 13........the larch. And now........the......larch....."

Damn you, pb.

Personally, I find pacifists a real pain in the butt.  All they ever do is complain and ask the same question all the time: "Why can't we all just get along?!"
It drives me nuts.  I simply cannot understand how anyone could think like that...  :|

about a year ago, i tried following Buddhism properly for a couple of months, not eating meat, pacifism and deep thinking (well, deep for me) being the most obvious changes in people who know me. Apartfrom many spots clearing up clearing up, it didnt seriously affect my life except to realise how much people hit out for no real reason, i have kept pacifism, and feelalot better for it.

But i do agree, there is nothing worse than a whining hippy who complains and doesnt do anything about him/herself.
