World Science Fiction Convention
« on: September 27, 2006, 06:44:20 PM »

This site sure as hell qualifies as Entertainment for me at least, so here goes:

http://midamericon.org/photoarchive/06worldcon.htm

Click above for a wonderous parade of sad. If this is what a SciFi convention is like, I'm never going.

One of you has to have gone to something like this before, so 'fess up. Tell me what it was like.

I've been to a SAS software users convention.  The food was fabulous and the swag wasn't bad.

My mind involuntarily named every robot in this lineup. I'm not so weirded out that I knew the names, but rather my mind's willingness to blab them all out so quickly.

No, I've read too much Something Awful to dare associate with those sorts of people (if that sounds elitist I'm sorry, but a lot of the con-goers I've met have seriously creeped me out).

Good call, but with stairs comes the danger of the Pusher Robot and the Shover Robot, you've got to beware of such things in our world today.

Yeah he got his ass handed to him, but at least he has a sense of humour about it. On the other hand, have you READ the blog he linked to on the SA main page that talks about the horrors of the goon 'cult' and how Lowtax is a real cult leader?

I'm reading it now. Jesus, I had no idea I was supposed to be in a cult because I joined a website! I hope this doesn't conflict with my Scientology responsibilities!

I've been to two conventions:

Comicon and Otakon. Comicon was far better, in my opinion. Once I move out of my mom's house I'm going to go to every Comicon and Otakon there is, and probably lots of other cons I haven't even heard of.

And I've been to the Cannabis Cup, but I don't think that counts.

That guy's blog made my head hurt. That's what happens when you give someone with untreated obsessive-compulsive disorder access to the internet. :-o

As for cons, I got press credentials to attend the Star Trek 40th anniversary con/ven/ference in Seattle a couple of weeks ago, which was the most horribly organized event of any kind I've ever been to. And people spent upwards of $1000 for "platinum" admission packages? What a terrific scam. I wish I would have thought of it first. $20 for Walter Koenig's autograph?

...OK, I did pay $20 for Nichelle Nichols to sign my vintage Uhura poster. And meeting George Takei was pretty cool. Marina Sirtis is probably hotter now than she was on TNG.

Overall though, it didn't inspire any desire to make a habit of attending cons.

Comicon does look a bit cool because I've heard they sometimes show upcoming movie sneak peak type things.

I've been to GenCon, once. This year.

Kevin Sorbo was there.  :?

So were the Mythbusters.  8-)

Adam's great; Walrus is a dick, though.
At least, on the show he is.

Well...he DOES have a gigantic shop and knows yonks of useful things. I think that the show needs someone like him to balance out Adam's hyperactivity.

Balance is good; he just has this "I'm SOOooo much better than you ALL, plus; you're dumb" thing going on with his character. I could do without that. And again; I haven't met him in person, so I dunno what he is like for real. Some shows have that dynamic going on intentionally to keep things "interesting". It's just not my thing, and I would do it differently if I were the producer. Laid back could be a good balance; then again - it IS an exciting TV show; "laid back" probably wouldn't work in that medium.
Maybe simply calm (Jamie does that very well), without the haughty part.

Yeah I guess, I know people like that who always need to have things go their way...he's just a bit on the anal side.

Apparently when the show was first made Jamie was the first one contacted but he didn't feel he was dynamic enough to be entertaining so he asked Adam (who he'd worked with previously) to come on board.

Apparently he knows what he is and/vs what he wants and isn't "All About ME", so that's good. Like I said; I don't know him, personally, so it could just be that character aspect for the show. Either way, I tend to not care much for people or characters who are dicks.
Doesn't keep me from watchin' teh Show, though! :D
