Ah, I see..  Maybe?

So if someone wants a search on someone else (Person B from here), person B must agree to give up those pieces of information?  Doesn't the kind of defeat the purpose of searching for someone?

Not really.  Most of the time, the people that use those services already have written consent, because they're doing a background check for employment purposes or security purposes, or both, so consent is voluntary.  ("Well, Mr. Smith, if you want a job with our firm, you will have to sign this consent form so that we can perform a thorough background check on you to ensure that you are who you say you are.")

And if you don't have consent, then your purposes are often not legitimate... in most states, that therefore means the "none of ya damn business" wall is up in front of you, and finding illegal methods of gaining that info usually involve some pretty stiff penalties if you get caught.

Ah, more clear now.  I still like the USAF's idea of backround check though... "Have you ever planned or been in a plot to overthrow the US Government?"  Um... Ye.. er, No, never, honest.

So, Banshee... do you play any AD&D at all, or were you just poking around that site out of sheer boredom?

I used to, but not any more. I could only find anything resembling a serious campaign back at my summer camp, which I haven't been to in years and years. Basically, that means that I wasn't quite hard-core.

I did manage to pretty much memorize 2nd Edition rules though... :) That's mainly what pissed me off about 3rd Edtion (which I only like when I'm playing Icewind Dale 2), that I had to learn a whole new rules set completely different from what I already knew. I did however, pick up a fair amount of 3rd Edition in spite of that.

Yes, it was also sheer boredom.  :D

That, again, depends on the reason they're performing the check.

I had a pretty good security clearance while I was in the US Navy, and believe me, they performed a very thorough background check on me.  They turned up information that to this day I'm baffled by... I have no idea how they got some of it.

However, they also missed some things that I thought fairly obvious, so you never know... maybe they just didn't think them important, or maybe they just aren't as thorough as we think.  Who knows?

My brother's background check before he went into the military was pretty lame, from what I've heard... but he doesn't have a security clearance to speak of, either, so I'm sure they're more vigorous on people they have to hand a higher level of trust to.

Er....

Oh, I know what you're talking about.  Yes, indeed... I did know.  In a couple of places.  Pretty obscure though.  One would have to put two and two together to get that bit.

Unless you got it from a place that I'm unaware of.

[/*bump*]

Well, I doubt it anyways, Lacerda, you don't have a handy-dandy friend IRL who can be researched for parallels to yourself, like Demo had Revka. I have no earthly clue where to begin searching for you...maybe with an IP number and your personal fileserver I could get some info....hmmm....background check after that? Or did you cover your tracks the same way Demo did?

Ye gods, you two are paranoid...

I just thought it might be a good idea given my proclivity for pissing people off.

Why don't they understand that I'm just being honest?

Seriously though, I've always been fairly private on the internet, and that certainly didn't change after I became a moderator at HACKER NETWORK.

I mean, geeze, you're just destined to piss people off doing that...

I'll be the first to admit that I'm moderately paranoid.  I think if more people had a healthy dose of paranoia there would be fewer problems involving allowing the government to have a bit too much leeway on spying on their own citizens.

I got worse after working as private investigator for a while.  That made me realize how easy it actually is to find out tons of information about the average person, and how little privacy there really is out there... and how little most people understand that.

I cover my tracks nowadays without even consciously thinking about it.  Basically the only way to really zero in on me would be to actually physically come to the city in which I live, and start asking around.

And as soon as that happens, I'll find out about it.
