I remember that book fondly from my childhood.

Of course, I was also probably 12 years old or so the last time I picked it up.  I may be remembering it more fondly than it deserves. That has happened to be several times when I've tried reading a book I loved as a kid...

I read that book within the last year as a classic of fantasy that I'd missed when younger and it wasn't all that good.  I think for the time it was written it was ground breaking.

Or Sociology, or Economics or Anthropology

Unless you're a full professor (with Ph.D.) of any discipline beginning with "P" at an accredited university, and then only if you have patches on the elbows.

I've seen some in the Social Sciences wearing the corduroy jacket with patches...

and Demo I think you're supposed to call us Socialists.  :slap

In college my resolution was always to be celibate for the upcoming year.  That way if I had a sexless year I could claim it was my resolution, and if I got laid who cares what my resolution was - I got laid.

Dude... here in the midwest, what Demo is wearing is what we call "ratty."  It's the sort of outfit you'd wear when, say, you're working in the yard or painting.  He can get away with it because he's clearly been on his hands and knees pulling cable or something similar.

I mean, he's not even wearing a business casual jacket, FFS!

Here in New England academia we have Hawaiian shirt competitions, and the faculty wear torn jeans and Birkenstocks.

I live on a peninsula with ocean less than a mile away on one side.  The bay is pretty protected and ocean level would have to rise 40' feet to get my front lawn wet but the amount of rain expected could be a bother.  We just got upgraded to a tropical storm warning but my town is on the border of a hurricane watch zone also, and if it tracks much further westward it's going right over us.

Yippee, maybe I'll work from home tomorrow.

oh and that map linked above kicks ass

I'm reading this lately.  It's surprisingly good.

That one is on my books in 2009 list, I enjoyed it also.

I'm currently reading A Canticle for Leibowitz and think you'd like this one also.

People who:

Use the phrase "That's gay" when negatively describing something.

You know I must admit that I do that one from time to time

but I also use phrases like "go to hell" and "jesus christ that hurts" etc...
Funny how the slurs of your youth stick with you.

Does that involve humming? I really need to keep up with the lingo.

I think trottled is similar except you make turkey noises

Anarchy / Re: Grown ups playing pokemon - is it OK to?
« on: July 23, 2010, 07:30:48 AM »
Hey man, I dunno. I think it's weird no matter what. I could be wrong on this point, but I doubt it.

If you played a lot of flag football with friends in HS then it makes sense that when you see a bunch of them you might want to play some flag football.  I played a lot of tabletop RPG's, board games and card games with different groups of people so when I hang out with that specific group we tend to pick up the relevant game type and play.  Me playing Magic:The Gathering with my college roommates is not the same as me going to local game stores and signing up to play in tournaments with kids 1/2 my age.

I guess my point is that everyone has hobbies and things they like to do to relax/unwind/have fun.  So long as your life is in balance no big deal to me.  The playing of a specific game doesn't indicate maturity level to me, it's someone wearing underwear on their head while playing that does.

To me it's like a grown up playing with Barbie dolls or GI Joe. A sign of a maturity issue at best, or a serious developmental issue, at worst. It's not a video game issue. It's an adult playing with a children's toy issue. But I am interested in other takes.
Discuss.

Depends, are they going to gaming stores and playing it with 12 yr olds in tournaments?  are they playing with friends the same age as them that grew up playing it together? by themselves? with their younger siblings/relatives?

Anarchy / Re: Need Latin Help
« on: July 20, 2010, 07:05:08 AM »
At the translator I found here

putting in your latin of 'Domitus ergo sumus'
gets 'To tame on account of are'

and 'victus ergo sumus'
gets 'victuals on account of are'

putting in 'We conquer therefore we are'
gets 'Nos victum proinde nos es'

68
Why's that? I find it easier to do when I'm standing.
Ah, you step, step - pull up

for some reason I thought you meant, hop, pull up

69
That sounds scary and strange. I like being a sock-sock, shoe-shoe person.

Speaking of putting clothes on... You know how people say we're all the same because we all put our pants on one leg at a time... That always made me question things because I put both legs in my pants at the same time.

I hope you are sitting when you do that, otherwise the slightest miscalculation could go very bad.

Actually -- scratch that. This is what I'd really like:

I like to hide the shoutbox, but when I do that I also hide the "Show unread posts since last visit" link. Can that link be moved somewhere else?

There is a little '-' to the right of the time, way up at the top right under the 'm' in 'forum.   I think that has been there for a while.  I remember hiding the shoutbox when it first was started

I've given up on reading books for a bit.  Instead, I'm making some. (clickzorz for full size)

Are you just making blank journal/sketch books?

Starting a new post and picking up at 31

  • 31.  Roadkill by Rob Thurman - Another supernatural in present day series, I wouldn't buy them but if you can read them for free I'd suggest it
  • 32.  Changes by Jim Butcher - Book 12 in this Wizard as a P.I. in Chicago series, very fun reads, good for the beach or on a flight
  • 33.  The Mirror of Worlds by David Drake - I love this authors military Sci-Fi and found this fantasy series to be very different from the typical ones, good book
  • 33.  The Gods Return by David Drake - the definite final for this fantasy series, slightly repetitive plotting towards the end (in the last couple of books) but over good stuff
  • 34.  Laugh Lines by Ben Bova - a collection of short stories and a couple of novellas, very enjoyable stuff
  • 35.  The War of the Dwarves by Markus Heitz - A second book about, well dwarves, by a german author.  The plotting is predictable but not a bad book
  • 36.  Storm from the Shadows by David Weber - this author does some very good military science fiction, his universe is getting almost too large and he has decided to break the one series into three that all have a different focus but take place at the same time.  Not for everyone but I like it
  • 37.  The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien - a classic that I never liked as a kid, but rereading it I really dig how much though Tolkien put into his world
  • 38.  The Misenchanted Sword by Lawrence Watt-Evans - a humorous fantasy novel, short easy read

I actually rip FoxIt reader out of all the Dell machines with images I receive.   Since it's pre-installed it's got tentacles in places that I really do not like.  I may have to go back and give it a try.
