Title: Hiccups
Post by: 12AX7 on July 03, 2008, 01:51:10 AM
Had the hiccups a few minutes ago. For some reason, hiccups

REALLY PISS ME THE FUCK RIGHT OFF!!!1!

Maybe cos it's part of my own body doing something on its own and I can't control it . . . very effectively, anyway. I can usually get them to stop in a reasonable amount of time; but if I can't I get MAD.

I usually do the hold-your-breath-as-long-as-you-can remedy, while trying to relax or stress my dia....   breathing muscle. (yep, know how to spell it; nope, not gonna hear the jokes about me and my diaphragm)
Anybody else got any sure-fire hiccup remedies?

Doing something that's active enough that it takes your mind off of the fact that you have the hiccups.

Eat something.

Sugar water... I don't know why, but it works.

I can cure my hiccups after the first one every time. And I'm glad too because hiccups for me are actually a bit painful.

It's sort of like resetting the valve that switches between your stomach and your lungs which results in a small burp.

I think I learned to do it after using the hold your breath method. Only I'd hold my breath and then try to breathe out, thus pressurizing the lungs and it'd sort of "push the burps up and out" would be a way of describing it.

Alternatively, you can have a faith healer slap your face while rebuking the hiccup demon residing in your throat.

My old Bio teacher taught me a method that's always worked for me. Stare at your finger. Not just stare, but really concentrate on your finger. Notice the pattern of your fingerprints and make it the most fascinating thing you've ever seen. Apparently using up all your concentration on something resets the 'hiccup' thingy in your brain and they stop.

Don't know if that's true or not, but it works for me.

Spoonful of sugar. No water needed.

That surely does do the trick. I figured that out right after I realized that threatening my diaphragm with extreme violence wasn't ever going to pay off.

I have discovered a way to cure the hickups instantly. Take in all the air you can, hold it, and slam yourself on the chest as hard as you can with fist closed, hitting with the palm. If you do it right, it will hurt you a little, but the hicup will be gone. Try that next time.
