Flamer's Corner / Craziest thing you've ever seen (at work)?
« on: June 30, 2007, 12:12:53 PM »
Alternate title: Make milifist feel better about his job.

What is the craziest thing you have ever seen at work? Absurd code? Wacky policies? Anything to reaffirm my belief that other people have to deal with workplace insanity.

I'll start with my job to give a baseline.

I work as a web developer in a small subsidiary of a huge heartless corporation. We develop websites for a specific industry. These are hosted solutions that the clients sign multi-year contracts for service.

The insanity:
The core of our sites is a set of 10+ year-old C programs that generate the html that is sent to the browser. The basic page layouts are stored in an Oracle db. The C programs connect to the db, read the layouts, pulls in the specific data the is placed in the layouts, and then generates html tables to format everything.

Wrapped around the C programs is a mess of php, java, perl, javascript, and shell scripts. Our sites all use frame sets. They rely heavily on javascript for code functionality (including security), and our main menu is a java applet.

We typical host only two-three accounts per webserver. However, all of the accounts essentially connect to a single Oracle db server. And, all of the servers are running SCO UnixWare.

And if all of that weren't bad enough, we offer an offline version of our sites (each site is customized for each client). The offline version is basically a copy of the online version hosted an XAMPP. Which means that virtually anyone can see all of our source code (minus the C garbage).

No one involved in the creation of the C programs still works at the company, however we have a couple of old, ardent, C coders that insist php is too inefficient. So it is unlikely to be any changes anytime soon.

Make me fell better, top that for insanity. Please.

On the upside though, my boss is hot! Even if she is a bit like one of those touchy-feelly, go team! type managers...

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Cheat Sheets
« on: May 04, 2007, 12:23:14 PM »
Yesterday I interviewed for a web application developer job. Four hours after the interview they called me back to offer me the job.

So today I started brushing up on my javascript, php, etc. I started by printing off a bunch of cheat sheets from ILoveJackDaniels. Some of them are quite neat, particularly if you print them out on good card stock. I figure that if I end up in a cubicle (I haven't seen where I'll actually be working yet), I'll line the wall with 'em.

The Regular Expressions one will be particularly useful for me because I can never remember them.

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / What do you call it?
« on: April 30, 2007, 07:09:15 AM »
The other day my brother-in-law mentioned setting up a my sequel server. It took my several seconds to realize he was talking about MySQL.

I've always pronounced each letter in SQL. I'd call MySQL: my ess-cue-el and MSSQL: em-ess ess-cue-el (or Microsoft ess-cue-el).
He always uses "sequel". Catches me off guard every time.

What do you call it?

Anarchy / Advertisements
« on: April 16, 2007, 11:06:29 AM »
Do you notice ads on the internet?

I've recently discussed this with various family members and virtually all of them either total ignore ads or outright block them. A few years ago I was the same way, but somewhere along the line I realized that ads are a great way of rewarding sites I enjoy.

Not only did I stop blocking ads, I even allowed myself to become interested in some of them and occasionally clicking them. Not only is it a way to support the site at no cost to myself, I occasionally find a good resource or a product I hadn't considered before (I'm not saying people should just go around clicking a bunch of links to generate revenue for a site, that can be detrimental rather than helpful).

Anarchy / Store brands
« on: April 13, 2007, 09:11:57 AM »
I'm always on the lookout for a good deal. This has often led to my trying various store brands. I've noticed that with the smaller local chains like Food Lion, Lowes Foods, Harris Teeter, Ingles, etc. store brand is pretty much hit-or-miss. Some items would be good, others garbage (all of Food Lion's brand hits into the garbage category).

Sam's Choice (Walmart)
I prefer their peanut butter cups to Reese's (and the Sam's caramel cups are also quite good).
Grapefruit pop. Store brand pop (soda, softdrinks, whatever you like to call them) are almost never any good, so I was absolutely shocked when I tried the grapefruit pop. It is really good. Their root beer is also passable, but I can't stand the rest of their line.

Oh, and the Walmart bakery makes excellent mini-doughnuts. Mmmmm.... doughnuts...

Kirkland (Costco)
I am amazed at how consistently good Kirland products have been. I discovered the Kirkland brand from one of my sisters. She buys a lot of Kirkland stuff. It would be like:

milifist cleaning up a mess: "Hey, that's a good papertowel! What brand is it?"
Sister: Kirkland.

milifist eating: "Wow, that's good bacon! What brand is it?"
Sister: Kirkland.

milifist changing nephew's diaper: "What brand of dip--"
Sister: Kirkland!

In fact, it was the Kirkland brand, that finally convinced me to become a Costco member. The only product that I have tried that I didn't like was their toilet paper. That is just one of those things you shouldn't experiment with.

Anyone else use store brand/generic?

Entertainment / What Gear?
« on: March 12, 2007, 01:03:30 PM »
Since around 2002, I’ve been trying to learn to play the guitar (off and on, and not very seriously). A couple of years ago, my cousin (who is a decent guitarist) suggested I that I start recording stuff to learn to play better. I’ve never been interested becoming a great player (I mainly play around with it as a form of stress relief).  However, I’ve found that I really enjoy the technical aspects of recording. Since I’m not too serious about things, I’ve been getting just about the cheapest gear I could lay my hands on.  :lol:

This is the stuff I’ve been using:

Aardvark Direct Pro LX6
I love this little thing. It is great for small-scale recording. 24/96, MIDI in/out, and S/PDIF in/out.  Makes nice clean recordings.

Major downside is that the company went under and there is zero linux support. I’m stuck using my good old ’98. For software, I’ve been using an old copy of Cool Edit Pro 2.1 and JAZZ++ MIDI seq.

Behringer Eurorack UB2442FX Pro
I didn’t really need this big of a mixer, but when I found someone selling this one for the price of a smaller one, I figured it wouldn’t hurt. While “used”, it was in excellent shape and in the original packaging. Turns out, the previous owner had never even used it. His wife bought it for him, but it was Behringer so he didn’t want it. Personally, I couldn’t be happier with it. I’m not picky. I like Behringer stuff. I love the fact that people will buy the things and then read some bad reviews so they sell’em off cheap even though it works fine. Which is also how I got my effect processor:

MODULIZER PRO DSP1224P

It is a fine little unit that works great, but what the previous owner wanted some something more like something from DigiTech’s RP line.

So, what is everyone else using?

Anarchy / HXC is back!
« on: March 02, 2007, 05:56:17 PM »
I’ve decided to rebuild HaXor Central. Better than it was before. Better…stronger…faster.
Unfortunately, some illegitimate rodent managed to grab the old domain when I forgot to renew it. So the new domain is haxorcentral.org.

I had initially been working on a groupware site that would allow a band to collaboratively create music over the internet. Something like sourceforge.net. While working on the proof-of-concept, I realized it had most of the functionality I had always wanted for HXC.

Sadly, for some reason most of my backups were corrupted. So, I don’t have all of the old files. I’ve re-uploaded the ones I have. According to my old xml playlist I don’t have these:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<songs>
   <song artist="SpurtReynolds" title="HotmailHack"/>
   <song artist="Demosthenes" title="drunk"/>
   <song artist="Dangermonk" title="Lowtop"/>
   <song artist="Dangermonk" title="Senior Harris"/>
   <song artist="Dangermonk" title="Suffer"/>
   <song artist="12AX7" title="Aces and Eights"/>
   <song artist="12AX7" title="Beautiful"/>
   <song artist="12AX7" title="Cold Dirt"/>
   <song artist="12AX7" title="Drop Like A Rock"/>
   <song artist="12AX7" title="D_half Blues"/>
   <song artist="12AX7" title="Gemini"/>
   <song artist="12AX7" title="How to Make Love to You"/>
   <song artist="12AX7" title="I Hate"/>
   <song artist="12AX7" title="I'm Sorry, Susie"/>
   <song artist="12AX7" title="itaintnuff"/>
   <song artist="12AX7" title="Rheinpfalz Lied"/>
   <song artist="12AX7" title="Say Goodbye"/>
   <song artist="12AX7" title="Summer Blues"/>
</songs>

Anyway, what survived is back online, so check it out. Signup and upload your junk!

Anarchy / Cool Tools
« on: January 12, 2007, 09:38:02 AM »
My choice for a cool tool today is the Irwin Vise-Grip Quick Adjusting Pipe Wrench

There are several gimmicky pipe wrenches out there, but in my experience the Irwin is the best. I was very skeptical the first time I got my hands on one. It is a lot different from a standard pipe wrench: you adjust the teeth rather than the jaw, and the jaw pivots out for quick catch and release. If you are used to a standard pipe wrench it can take some time to get used to the Irwin.

After using it for a while, it is now my first choice in a pipe wrench. Now if only they made larger sizes…

Not being able to post in the tech section sucks.  :|

A good registrar will offer free URL/domain forwarding and masking/cloaking for the domains you register with them. I’ve never used godaddy.com, but I know they offer it. I personally use namecheap.com (an enom reseller).
Check out THIS SITE for coupons.

Keep in mind that forwarding is generally ok, but masking/cloaking can get your sites penalized by google.
