Anarchy / "Beta" testers needed for RPG« on: April 19, 2005, 08:27:01 AM »
Yeah, it's an ad. So sue me.
In all seriousness, I'm lead beta/playtester for a forthcoming RPG from Shrapnel Games, and they're in need of experienced roleplayers to stress-test the system and make sure everything works. If you're interested, please PM me or email me at reimero (at) omgjonx dot com. It involves registering as a Shrapnel beta tester and providing feedback. On the other hand, it's a chance to comment on a game before it gets released. 30
Anarchy / Is reimero a Hoosier?« on: February 04, 2005, 12:57:19 PM »
So I'm wondering: am I a Hoosier?
Reasons I may be a Hoosier: -I live in Indiana -I was born in Indiana -I used to play basketball -I can reach cornfields in less than 10 minutes -I attend one of the Indiana University campuses -I've seen "Hoosiers" more than once -I still get goosebumps during the scene when Gene Hackman takes the tape measure and the ladder just before the finals -I think Daylight Savings Time sucks ass -I drive an old, beat-up SUV -I know exactly what "knee-high by the 4th of July" refers to. Reasons I may not be a Hoosier: -I don't care for pro basketball and am not rabid about college or High School basketball -I'm from the northern part of the state, which is "practically Michigan" -I don't speak like a hick or a redneck. In fact, I have no discernable regional accent. -I pronounce "insurance" as "in SURE ents" and not "IN sherrnce" -The "r" in "wash" is silent (i.e. I don't pronounce it "warsh") -I *hate* NASCAR and am adamantly against the notion that the anniversary of the death of Dale Earnhardt should be a national holiday. 31

Anarchy / I need a new work shirt« on: September 28, 2004, 03:03:59 PM »
I need a new shirt. But not just any shirt. It has to be the right shirt. For starters, it has to be work-safe, so t-shirts are right out. Business casual is the order of the day.
Logos and slogans are fine, as long as they're not profane, vulgar or in any way supportive of USC's or Michigan's football programs. I also want to keep the price <$30 (not including shipping). I don't want anything pro-Microsoft, and prefer not to have the Firefox polo because a friend of mine already has that one. Aside from that, I'm open to suggestions. 33
Political Opinions / What is the libertarian stance on this topic?« on: September 16, 2004, 11:52:51 AM »
http://www.cnn.com/2004/HEALTH/09/15/abortion.refusals.ap/index.html
Synopsis: in some states and now in Congress, a "conscience clause" is being enacted that permits hospitals, doctors and pharmacists to refuse to perform certain procedures, dispense certain drugs or make certain referrals because they deem them immoral. In the vast majority of cases, this involves abortion and/or contraceptives. Abortion-rights advocates are decrying the legislation as further efforts to restrict a woman's right to have an abortion or acquire contraceptives. Proponents of the legislation defend it because otherwise it forces health-care professionals to violate their moral and religious beliefs. Without commenting on my personal beliefs in the matter (which a lot of you would probably be able to guess anyway), my question is this: What is the Libertarian stance on this issue? I'm having a hard time answering because it's an issue of the conflict of civil liberties. Does refusing to fill a prescription violate a person's right to live as she chooses? Does mandating that someone violate a personal moral code violate that person's basic rights? Do I as young woman with a crisis pregnancy have the basic right to go to Our Lady of Perpetual Catholic Dogma Hospital and demand an abortion because it's her right and the hospital has the means? Or does Our Lady of Perpetual Catholic Dogma Hospital have the right to invoke freedom of religion and separation of church and state and deny the procedure on the grounds that it is contrary to what the church allows? 34

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / I need advice on simplifying a procedure« on: July 06, 2004, 10:17:01 AM »
In the course of my job, one of the things I have to do is take data from an Excel spreadsheet, massage it a bit and upload it into our server. Of course, it's not as simple as a straight translation, so there's some manual work that needs done.
Basically, what I'm looking to do is take a spreadsheet with the following data (|-delimited): Lastname, Firstname|SSN|LocalAddress|LocalAddress2|City|State|Zip|Phone|Email and turn it into this format: RECORD: <--- static value 0000 <---static value 30 <---static value 7m-dd-yy <---- static value nLastname, Firstname hLocalAddress$LocalAddress2$City State Zip pPhone zEmail To make things even more interesting, not all records will have all the info. At the very least I'll have a name, but everything else may or may not be there, depending on available information. How would you go about doing this? 39
Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / A novel defense from the Freedom of Information Act« on: June 29, 2004, 04:45:17 PM »
I don't know if this goes in here or politics, but, ummm, wow. Just, wow. Full coverage at /.
The gist is that the Dept. of Justice is refusing to release some records under the Freedom of Information Act on the grounds that putting the database under that sort of load could crash the whole thing irretrievably. Weird Tingly Feeling!?!?!?!? They don't even back the thing up??!!??!?!? If those are the standards for government database management, I want a government job!!! 40

Political Opinions / Absolutely stunning development from SCOTUS« on: June 29, 2004, 10:03:34 AM »
The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that COPA (the anti-pr0n act) may be unconstitutional and sent it back to lower courts for further review, while preventing its implementation. This is a fairly important first amendment ruling.
The stunning part is how the votes fell. A 5-4 or 6-3 decision was highly probable. I'd have guessed that it would be a 5-4 decision with Kennedy, Souter, Ginsburg and Stevens voting to strike down, Rhenquist, Scalia, Thomas (aka Scalia Jr.) and Breyer voting to uphold and O'Connor casting the swing vote (she can be VERY hard to read at times.) The actual vote: Strike down/remand to lower court: Kennedy, Souter, Ginsburg, Stevens and Thomas!!11!!!!11!! Uphold: Rhenquist, Scalia, Breyer, O'Connor I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen Thomas disagree with Scalia, and one of those was concurring but going even further. I'm absolutely stunned by this. 42

Political Opinions / Can I dis Michael Moore in here?« on: June 28, 2004, 03:52:16 PM »
I haven't seen Farenheit 9/11, nor do I intend to, but this guy rubs me the wrong way. I watch his sensationalist piece of garbage (aka a "documentary") "Bowling for Columbine" and was both disturbed and disgusted by his conclusions and his lack of insight.
Now I'm bothered by the fact that he's claiming this new movie has nothing to do with getting Kerry elected. Truth is, he's registered as a Democrat in New York, and registered to vote in Michigan. (That's right: he's legally registered to vote in 2 states. I'm not sure that's entirely legal.) He's also actively pushing people to vote Democrat and get their friends to vote Democrat. I don't have a problem with partisan politics. I do have a problem selling hyperbole as fact and in misrepresenting yourself as what you're not: he claims to be an independent filmmaker who is concerned about the direction of the country. He is, in fact, a registered and card-carrying Democrat.[/code] 44
Political Opinions / When should a Supreme Court justice recuse him/herself?« on: June 21, 2004, 11:48:09 AM »
As we all know all too well, Supreme Court justices answer to no one when it comes to recusing themselves from cases. In one case, Justice Scalia recused himself from a case (the "under God" case) because he had spoken about the case even though it was still pending. This is a clear, cut-and-dry case of when recusal is warranted.
In another case, he refused to recuse himself for private affiliation with a major shareholder in a company with a case on the docket, arguing that the personal and professional relationships were seperate and warranted distinction. Scalia caught a lot of flack about not recusing himself on this one. The polar opposite happened today, when the Supreme Court issued a ruling involving whether U.S. corporations could be compelled to turn over some documents to courts in other countries (in this case, it was Intel being compelled by AMD in a case brought in Germany, I believe.) Anyway, Sandra Day O'Connor recused herself because she had previously held Intel stock in her portfolio (but does not currently, from what I inferred.) So, as a matter of curiosity, at what point does a true conflict of interests exist? In some cases, true disinterest and detachment can't really exist, and the justices have to remain as neutral as possible. Was O'Connor right to recuse herself? Or would she have been ok staying with the case? (The decision was 7-1, BTW, so her vote wouldn't have been important.) 45
Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Firefox 0.9« on: June 16, 2004, 10:22:41 AM »
I'm giving it a whirl now. Migration from 0.8 was a breeze (although you have to uninstall 0.8 before you install 0.9). The theme takes a little getting used to. Aside from that, it's as lean and mean as one would expect. I won't know about stability for some time, but it's certainly very fast.
