I'm comparing two 8x42 binoculars:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/compare/Vortex_8x42_Diamondback_Binocular_vs_Bushnell_8x42_Legacy_WP_Binocular/BHitems/599329-USA_421386-REG

They're both waterproof with a wide angle and weigh nearly the same (34 gram difference)

My question is: Are the Vortex ones really worth nearly 3x the price?
Sure they're roof prism (more compact and durable, right?) and can focus 3x closer, but I can't imagine trying to use binoculars to view something less than 12 feet away. (Would be used for concerts and the occasional hiking/camping trip)

Are there other significant differences between these that aren't covered by the spec list?

I can see my initial opinion was probably right. I don't think I'll be sticking around to read any more threads that deteriorate into drivel as this one has. Thank you to the few of you who welcomed me, but good bye. Novice -- judiciously backing out of the room.

Seriously, though, if you haven't already given up on us, I'd probably head to a hunting store or something like that nearby. They might have those or similar models to test out or at least some helpful advice to help you make your decision.
