The PATRIOT Act Poll
« on: June 07, 2004, 08:34:15 AM »

This article on Wired got me thinking... there has been so much backlash against the much-reviled PATRIOT Act that I really have to wonder if those idiots are going to actually be able to renew it when it expires (in December 2005), or if they'll be able to remove the expiration clause some time before that.

Personally, I think this thing's history.  I have the distinct impression that a new piece of legislation will replace it, but this one will be a bit more Constitutionally-friendly.

What about you guys?

They'll try to renew it. If it is not renewed, then someone in Congress will try to pass another bill that states the same things, but in another way.

Personally, it's stupid. Are they going to go to my library and find out that I have had Starship Troopers out for three months now (Meaning it is about 2 and a half months overdue), come to my house and accuse me of trying to wage war on another planet?

Now that the cat is out of the bag, I don't think it will be renewed, at least not in its current form.  Some aspects may be revisited, but it's just too controversial.

I think it'll go - it basically gives the government agencies carte blanche to dig up all kinds of information, from all kinds of sources. So many people know about what it means, and how it's being used that I don't think any sane government would re-institue it.

However, a lot of it will come back repackaged, and reworded to make it at least appear constitutional. I think that having been given these powers, federal agencies will be very reluctant to just let them go.

Another vote for being renewed, but under a different name.

I hope it doesn't have a chance.  I'm surprised that it hasn't been overturned by the Supremes yet, or at least by Diana Ross...
