Is anyone psyched for the 100KM test flight of SpaceShipOne on Monday?

Live webcast here: http://msnbc.msn.com/id/5236958/ starting at 9:30am EDT.

I would *SO* be on that plane if I could be.

Another 5-10 years after this and I bet sub-orbital flights will be common place. Imagine 90 minutes to anywhere on the earth. Go surfing in Australia in the morning, shopping in Tokyo that afternoon, dinner in Paris, and be home for bed. Of course that'd probably cost most people several years salary, but whatever. :-) 5-10 years after that they'll have the cattle car version for us poor slobs.

Keep dreaming. And add fifty years to each of those numbers, at best. SS1 is cheap, sure- comparatively. We're a looong way off of true commercial spaceflight. A L-O-N-G way.

Edit: I don't mean to be as harsh as that sounds- I would love to see feasible personal spaceflight in my lifetime. I just don't believe it's a realisitic possibility. There's too much government in the way, and not enough money headed that direction. It's sad, really. I meant what I said, though. Keep dreaming- it's dreams that make spaceflight go.

Oh, I don't think it'll be a fleet of SS1's sitting around your local airport. SS1 is definately a proof of concept vehicle.

But people said the EXACT same things after a certain little event in Kitty Hawk 100 years ago. And then along came the DC-3 and Ford tri-motor and things changed.

Granted there were two small wars in between there, and nothing motivates innovation like the chance to blow the other guy to hell and back.

But I still think that once it's shown to be possible without government interference that (pardon the pun) it'll take off.

I could care less. Actually, I probably couldn't, so I just contradicted myself.

Now that's something I could care less about.

See, I just don't understand why someone wouldn't care about a milestone like this happening in their lifetimes.

Granted, it's not the first time a human has reached sub orbit, but it is the first time ever that this has been done by a private organization without any government interference.

In fact, the FAA seems to be falling overthemselves to provide all the documents and paperwork for this project to get off the ground.

I missed the first moon landings by 2 years, and they were all over before I was old enough to know anything about them. But this is just as important as those Apollo flights. If not more so.

MOJAVE, California (CNN) -- Rocket plane SpaceShipOne reached an altitude above 62.5 miles (100 km) during its brief flight Monday morning, making it the first privately built craft to fly in space, controllers said.

And landed safely! They're already generations ahead of NASA and the ESA!

Ouch... Brutal... just brutal.

(And oh so true :-)

Apparently a stabilizer failed on re-entry. Wonder how long will the conspiracy kooks come out saying it was deliberate sabotage by the CIA.

<-- conspiracy kook. but not that far!

I heard a lil blurb about this on the news a few minutes ago, and the guy said something like "I let a packet of m&m's loose in the cockpit at zero gravity!" He was quite excited!

Edit: "and when I got to the top, I released a bag of m&m's into the cockpit! it was amazing!"
