I love the rationalizations people like this use to somehow make them "just ordinary, legitimate businessmen".

Richter: We're not the reason that spam is an issue. People can opt out of our lists. We're not the people who send you the Viagra ad, with Viagra spelled 12 different ways. We're not the people who won't let you ever opt out. We're out to make the Internet a better place with e-mail marketing.

How could email marketing possibly make the internet a better place?

"An automatic de-boning glove/umbrella? Oh gee, I didn't know that I wanted that. THANKS EMAIL MARKETING!

Someone needs to hit him upside the head with a clue-by-four.

Personally, I like the slashdot method of dealing with spammers: sign them up for as much snail mail spam as humanly possible.

I hate SPAM. I really do.

So I guess someone buying a domain name and having their email address in the WHOIS database is, "signing up for free websites, which are connected to our network, and have agreeded to receive our emails".

Yea, I know what those morons do. They go to WHOIS databases to harvest email addresses. Well... that's one way anyway.

I remember reading something about that. They signed one guy up for so much crap that they had to have a truck deliver it to his hosue once a day. I think I remember reading it was about a ton of mail a day.

God, could you imagine how much mail that is? You can't just throw that away easily either, you'll most likely have to arrange for a special pick up, which isn't too cheap nowadays.

Well I'm sure such a person can just "opt out" of each one of those pieces of snail mail advertising, individually.

They should have a "buy this product and we won't bug you for a year" option. Heck, they'd make more money that way.

They kind of already do.  A lot of the bigger spammers (including the one from the interview I linked) use spam to sell their spam-filtering software.

Let's hope any and all anti-spam legislation passes, and then we can forget all about this crap.

(Within the five to eight years it takes to enforce)

It's not just spam.  It's the entire realm of marketing that is perverse.  I keep waiting for them to add MPD to the DSM V when it comes out.

MPD is of course Marketing Personality Disorder.
