« on: June 01, 2005, 11:59:55 AM »

Hi, members of the Geek forum, I was wandering if you could please help me out with the British television programme I'm researching. It's about addiction (and yes, that includes internet addiction).

My name's Sarah, and you'll find my contact details at the bottom of this post. I look forward to hearing from you...

So, do you have an extra-ordinary addiction?
Are you, for example, addicted to:
Text messaging,
Pornography,
Jelly Babies,
The Gym,
Television,
Something even stranger?

Do you have a fascinating tale to tell?
What impact has your addiction had on your life?
Has it ever pushed you close to death?
Are friends and family aware of your addiction?
Do they understand?
Have you ever sought help?

Are you a forthright and honest individual willing to talk openly about your addiction on TV?
Can you take viewers on a journey into the darkside of your addiction?
Are you able to provide words of wisdom to other addicts?
Are you willing to confront your addiction whilst in front of the camera?

If so, you may be just the person to take part in a forthcoming
documentary about modern addiction for a mainstream terrestrial
broadcaster.
Please e-mail me, sarah@addiction.me.uk, telling me:
•   about you
•   about your addiction
•   your age
•   your gender
•   your contact details
•   and your locality
(all contact will be strictly confidential)
Deadline for applications: August 2nd 2005

I really look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again for your time. :)

Jelly Babies are small sweets.

Perversely they are shaped like babies. Even stranger the recommended way to eat them is either

1) Bite their heads off, seen as a quick and merciless death

2) Eat them from the feet upwards, a more cruel method of imbibing sugar

We in Europe have had many more centuries to become truly somisphacated, as can be seen by our culinary habits.

Sarah,

We've been getting a LOT of hit-and-run posters lately, generally falling into 1 of 2 categories: "OMG HELP ME WITH $something" or "OMG VISIT MY WEBSITE."

When you come to teh Geekery (OMFGLOL), the forum at the very top is the "Hi!  I'm new here!" forum.  Please, please, please, for the love of Pepe, post in that forum first and then lurk and/or respond for a short while before hitting us with a poll like this.  We're a small community here.  We notice new people.

I voted for the third option.  It seemed to make the best sense.

if someone truly was addicted to the internet, it doesn't seem likely that they would believe themselves to be.
same with pretty much everything else, i guess...

people who admit it to themselves are taking the first steps towards rehabilitation and therefore not being addicted anymore...

consider for example someone you know who smokes forty-eight packs of cigarettes a day and yet claims he can give it up any time he likes. this man is an addict although he says he is not. the man who says "i'm addicted" realises the problem and can give it up any time he likes.

I disagree completely.  While realizing you have an addiction is important, it does not mean that you can then "give it up any time you like".  Here's an example.  I smoke.  I am fully aware of the fact that I am addicted to it.  I cannot just give it up any old time, because it's an addiction.  You see, there's a difference in knowing that you have an addiction and taking steps to rid yourself of said addiction.  I know that I have one.  I choose not to do anything about it at this point in my life.

you know you have an addiction because you're told you have one. there's enough anti-smoking paraphernalia hanging about for you to be an informed individual and realise that you have an addiction. where addiction to the internet differs is in the fact that it is not widely publicised and, where it is, is not necessarily regarded as a good or bad thing - therefore the individual can make their own minds up about whether they do or do not have an addiction.
