I was just wondering what the diff was between the two formats. When downloading stuff I always go for .Mpg as you can preview this type of file in advance. Is there really any advantage of .Mpg over .Avi and if so what? Is there any way of preveiwing .Avi files so you don't spend forever downloading a dud ( In Kazaa lite or Imesh ). Finally I'm uncertain of exaclty what the resolution numbers mean. In general I assumed that .Mpg had superior resolution but I have seen some .Avi files with larger numbers for resolution than their .Mpg equivilent. Is the higher the numbers the better the quality of picture in the same size screen or is it just a lager screen.

.avi are usually smaller of size without sacrifice quality, the thing is, they can be compressed alot more.

If it's stuff you want to download on your machine to view at your convenience, I would go with AVI for the 2 reasons mentionned above. But if you want to view stuff on-line then view MPEGs as they have streaming capabilities, unlike AVIs.

Now I've just got another 50 until The Mummy is downloaded ( 56K modemns suck :) )

Anyway any Ideas of decent films that people want to recommend are welcome.

Since I built my P.C on my own and software cost so much - $300 + for office and stuff - I sorta haven't paid for any of it :wink: ( don't tell microsoft :) )

It would be nearly impossible for people to do what they do with computers today if it weren't for P2P programs and other various programs used for file sharing. The amount of money that people would need would just be too much.

300 for this, 75 for that, 350 for the operating system. The companies don't need that much money.

I think we need a new business model for IP (intellectual property) anyhow, including music. Check out http://tipping.selfpromotion.com/?CF for an interesting article on "Tipping - a method for optimizing compensation for intellectual property." by Robert Woodhead. Makes sense to me. In fact, our band has decided we will always give our music away for free and simply ask people who like our music and want to hear more to make contributions to our recording projects. We don't play music to make a fortune - we write and perform because we love it. I'm sick of the music industry - because it's just that, a machine for making the big companies money. It's high time the real artists, those in the trenches, raise up in revolt and take the art of music back to the people where it belogns. Okay, I'm getting off my soapbox now... lol.

There's been some mention of that on HN I think, Phoenix, and I fully agree. Music SHOULD be free, so it can be enjoyed by everyone and so-called "intellectual property" sounds ridiculous to me when it includes being able to buy and sell "ideas" like furniture.

This is a remarkable opinion considering my mother specializes in patent law. :)

Something like that PB. We're investigating a couple of routes. There's a site called MusicLink.com (formely Fairtunes.com) that is nfp and exists solely so people can contribute to the artists who list with them. There's also Buskpay.com (for the youngens - busking is an old term for soliticing contributions - like the artists on the streets of NYC). Or there's PayPal, but I've read a few uncomplimentary things about the PayPal system.

Lol, Cyber - yes shit does happen, just not to me! ;)
