I've hopped on the bandwagon haven't I?
« on: September 21, 2002, 02:22:19 AM »

I'm not that new.
Actually, I registered here even before Demo (they still had that repulsive forum set up).
I mostly lurked in the shadows reading, but I found that with  more and more of the topics, the more I wanted to say something. So, why not?
I myself am having no problems with HN but it seems that most of the interesting posters are, and thus, not attending as much.
This place has really grown.
Well, see ya around.

Step into the light my dear so that we may see you better then.

Ohh.  Hi Daria, couldn't tell it was you in the shadows.  And welcome to the Geekery.  And by the way some of us (perhaps just me) noninteresting posters have come here too.

Welcome.

I think the reason for less posts at HN is because either people don't have as much time, or it's because it's too slow now and people don't want to wait that long for one page to load up.

As soon as they switch hosts, it'll clear up. Well... in terms of the speed problem.

Indeed it is much slower at the moment.  I'm sure CG will get it straightened out before long.  But with fewer posts to read that just leaves more time to come here to read and or post.

Daria you say your not having any problems with it.  Are you on a dial up?

Yep, I'm on dial up.
Nothing has changed for me. HN is just as fast as ever.

I figured that after you said it.  I was at our son't house last night with his 56K modem.  It seemed about like this DSL does now at HN.

Welcome, Daria. I've read many of your posts on HN and look forward to hearing from you.

I still have one question for you-- What exactly do you do in Japan? Are you a journalist?

I wish, actually I'm a civilian worker for the DoD in DFAS. (Finances)
This is temporary; I also sometimes get jobs off base that don't require too much Japanese speaking talent.

Holy Cow! I used to live in Yokohama (specifically Nishishiba), and went to the base all the time. If you're lucky enough to get on-base housing, then congrats-- I had to leave the country because I couldn't survive without speaking the language. It was a few years ago, but even so...

I always thought you were a civvy who just lived in Japan doing some "correspondence" like your title said...

Gee, that's really neat. How long have you been in Japan? You may not know of Noukendai station, but my old house was between it and Kanazawa-bunko... Well anyway, that's great-- at least I wasn't the only gaijin who couldn't speak Japanese conversationally...sometimes it seemed like the only people who couldn't were the younger sailors and officers, who mostly populated the classes I took on base.

#1 thing I liked about living in Japan: $1.00 movies at the base cineplex. I wish I still had that privilege now...

You must have been at Yokota, right?
I have to live on base. Blah. It's been almost a year, I'm going to leave this summer and start getting serious about school, I'll have money this time!

I live in Yokota, but I've been to many including Yokosuka, Zama by far being the crappiest.
I wish I lived by Yokosuka, I could go jogging by the ocean instead of the flight line.
Yokosuka's the closest to Yokohama, (Right? I'm not sure.) but I'm not that far away.

Ah, I've never been there but for a stop through on plane trips.

The shore is nice, sure, but I liked seeing the ships more. Very impressive.
