Advertised battery life on iPod Video misleading...
« on: January 15, 2006, 06:05:54 PM »

I recently bought an iPod Video.... I got the 30gb because i am poor  :P

On the box it says it has a 14hour battery life. Yet after about 6 hours (or less) of use the battery meter displays aroung 5% battery life.

During this time I would be using it I would be simply listening to music.

Has anyone else noticed similar battery problems with the iPod Video?

If so I would love to hear your opinion on the matter.

I don't own an iPod video, buy my iPod mini has battery issues as well. It only lasts about six hours before whining about needing to be recharged.

I was thinking that maybe the images of the battery meter were ordered wrong cause my battery level seems to just from 1/10 to 5/10 randomly.

Edit: I checked the firmware and the battery meter is fine...

Did you let the thing charge for the allotted time when you first set it up?

Also, things like backlight, the clicker, and an incessant need to skip songs (I'm so guilty of that) will drain your battery faster.

Yep the 14 hours is best possible scenario.  It must be you who is draining it prematurely.

I can't believe I just said draining it prematurely...

I've got musical ADD. 1,500 songs and I still can't find something I want to listen to at that EXACT moment.

I see... I was thinking that was the reason... Thanks  :D

I'll just set-up some playlist with my favourite songs on them to avoid skipping tracks.

yea. I believe the software in the ipod just estimates how much battery life is going to be consumed if you continue what you're doing. For example, if you flip thru pictures for about 15 seconds, it will show no battery warning.  If you return to just listening to music, the battery life meter will return to what it previously was..  I am only getting around 3 hrs of battery life for videos tho... I hope the next generation has better than that...btw mine is the 60gb model, which supposably has more life than the 30..
