A full computer box for under 500$
« on: October 13, 2002, 07:38:28 PM »

What would be the best setup for a box that has to have a 30gig HD, 32meg vid card, a sound card, and atleast a 1.3ghz chip?
Open for suggestion.

30 gig hard drive: 75 dollars
32 meg video card: 70 dollars, maybe less
Sound card: 40 dollard
1.3 ghz processor: 80 dollars

Those prices may be off 5 or 10 dollars, but they're pretty much "on the money". Are you going to be needing a motherboard, modem/network card, power supply, CD ROM, floppy drive and case to go with all of that?

If so, you might be cutting it a little close with only 500 dollars. You might have to cut corners to get a running system. Like cases and stuff.

I almost forgot, what about a monitor? Do you need one of them? Or will you be willing to use an old(er) one from an existing computer that you're no longer going to use? Because if so, you're going to really run into some problems with money. Expect to spend over 100 dollars AT LEAST on a monitor if you're not going to use an old one.

Onboard video sucks man, how can you handle that? I guess if you never game...but even then, the resolutions are generally complete shit.

Also, get a cheap refurbished monitor for 60 bux or so off of ebay - I've bought about 5 of them, never had any problems. You can find those old Gateway/Dell 17" for really cheap.

1.8Ghz processors can go for about $100 OEM. Price increases sharply after about 2.0Ghz though.

Agreed. But it's all relative. Some people have to have a riced up honda to go 65 mph. I have a 90 Jetta that does basically the same thing. Is it more fun? No. Is it prettier and faster? Yea, if that's your thing.

I use em in my internet cafe, and have never had complaints. I just can't justify spending the thousands of dollars on video cards, when I can put it to better use, like in my pocket.
