Stolen Anti-Matter question
« on: December 28, 2006, 07:57:25 PM »

I stole this from a sweet little comic I saw which I don't know the name of.

If antimatter is the opposite of matter in this dimension, then if you take anti-hydrogen and anti-oxygen could you make anti-water?  And in the anti-verse could you then create fire with the anti-water?

It's not technically the opposite of matter as I understand it, the charges are just reversed.

All it means is that Evonus would have kick ass karma

Water and fire aren't really opposites. The planeteers lied.

Well...isn't one of the attributes of opposites that they cancel eachother out? Fire and water certainly do that.

So that means CO2 foam is also an opposite of fire, as is sand, as is empty space. But to be honest about it, neither water nor any of the things I mentioned are canceled out by fire, they just cancel out fire.

If the topic of this thread is stolen anti-matter.

Wouldn't that be the same as matter given?

No, not directly.

From the beginning of our universe the two types of matter have existed, and so they do now. Whenever an antimatter thingy reaches the same matter thingy they annihilate and become pure energy.
(The amount of energy is equal to the loss in mass (of both particles) and mulitplied by the speed of light to the power 2. Or, simply, E=mc^2. Yes folks, the magic formula :D Energy can be turned into mass and vice versa! Just as I can say I weigh 75 kg I can say I consist of 6.74066384 × 10^21 Joules.)

Back to the point, if you steal anti-matter, the amount of matter stays the same, at that moment. As stated above, they are both 'real' particles. You can't make up the difference between a anti matter spoon and a matter spoon. If you take the anti matter spoon out, you just got 1 spoon left.

However, energy reacts constantly with anti matter and matter and if you take some anti matter 'out', that balance is disturbed. With the effect that some matter is turned into antimatter, reinstating that balance. So, yes, in time there will be less matter if you take out some anti matter.

(The process of antimatter into matter is slightly favoured over the process of matter into antimatter. That is why we call our matter that way. If it were the other way around, we would consist of antimatter now and call 'matter' our 'antimatter'.)

Nevermind.  I think the joke has been lost.
