My P.C's screwed (again...)
« on: November 15, 2002, 04:28:13 PM »

My computer has been switching off randomly recently. I leave it on occasionly overnight and when I return to it in the morning I find it has rebooted itself. I've been around twice when its re-booted and it has flashed up a blue error screen for a few seconds just before it begins. Its now gotten a whole lot worse. The machine and the monitor have started to disagree with on and another and when the computer boots up (the fans start spinning and the hard drive whirrs) the monitor stays dead with the flashing message that its not reciving any signal (also the keyboard doesn't work when booted up - the "num lock" light that flashes up when its got power doesn't light. This refusal to boot has only occured over the last two days. The first time I unplugged all the cables and hooked it up to my old monitor. Everything worked fine so I put it back as it originally was and it worked o.k. I left it on for a while and when I came back it had re-booted. I used it for a while and then a blue error screen flashed up and it went again. I managed to get it up and running by  reseting the CMOS on the mobo. A while later it went down again and this time it looks pretty dead. The main unit still powers up but the monitor stays dead. I've tried hooking it up to my old monitor and reseting the CMOS but to no avail. I cannot think of what else I can do to get it to work. Finally when I try to boot - sometimes - it up the P.C lets out a longish beep (lasting a few secs) every so often. I have no idea whats caused it. The P.C's fairly new and its not got too much data on it - the newest "suspect thing I've got is DivX pro. It came with some ad-ware. I know this on its own is harmless but I blocked it from accessing the net and used "Ad-Aware" and "spybot" to remove a few of the companats. I know its probably not that but its about the only thing I can think of thats been causing problems on my P.C. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this and how I can solve it?

Thanks in advance

Or you can just get the aerosolized Ghost B-Gone, available at the offices of Psychic Palm Readers everywhere.  Worked wonders for me...

Meh?

Anyway I got a bit of help elsewhere. The seem to be implying its a mutlipul hardware failure tied in with the memory  :) Well whatever it is I guess I'll manage to sort it. Worse comes to the worse I can take it to a shop like Pc World. Still it a pain trying to sort out my stupid Access database project on this slow hideous machine know as "my old computer" :(

Lol.... "Access database".

Isn't that an oxymoron?  Like "Jumbo Shrimp", or "Microsoft Works"?

I'm actually getting places. I managed to start the thing again - by giving both the graphics card and memory a good shove to make sure they were seated correctly. Its still crashing almost as soon as I get in and after checking the event Log I couldn't really find anything amiss. Its changing between the 1500+ and the 2100+ which might be part of the problem - the bios at the mo can't handle the 2100+ and needs to be updated. I also managed, on boot up just now, to copy down infomation that one of the blue screen flashes up. It was saying that there might be a driver problems and stuff. I got down the code and am gonna see what else I can glem from it.

(change vid cards to what? The only other one I have is in the machine - a real old Ati adn a vulcan 2 - which my parents will kill me if I touch them...)

well since you were saying that you had no video at all before... but its apparent now that, thats not the problem.. possibly try this, set the jumpers on your mother board to the lowest setting... then see what happens

There are tons of jumpers on the motherboard...

What I would do is invest on a new mobo/CPU because thats what seems to be the problem.

Its gone again.

I was in the process of trying to get rid of Kazaa - and all of its ad-ware - when it crashed. Its gone back to the old problem of booting but no pic on the monitor. If I can get in again I'll try and flash the bios - I was kinda doing this already but it was a bit complex and I was trying to learn more about it before I rushed into anything (The main problem was it said to create a system disk and then add some files but when i tried to boot of it - like I was supposed to - it said ti couldn't because of the added files).

Just a quick point I have tried to scan the disk with the disk scanning thing but each time it fails - it says that there are file in use by windows etc and it'll only work on re-boot, after re-boot it comes up with more errors and thus I can't do it. Also, after going through the event log I have found 1 event that could be part of the problem. It says something along the lines of "true vector problem" and mentions a .dll file (I'll post the specifics when I get them).

Got it up again and I've managed to catch one of the illusive blue screens (after turning off the "auto restart in case of error" thing)

Heres what it said : -

It reccomended that I try a different video adapter.

Try removing "caching" and "shadowing" in the bios menu

It didn't show specifics but it mentioned to check any new software / drivers and try and unistall them.

The exact code in it gave was : - 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x804ED3CE, 0Xf87959C, 0x00000000)

It also carried out a "physical Memory Dump"

Any ideas what this means or where I can go to find out

Thanks
