Maybe it's the name of the forum?
« on: February 05, 2007, 06:19:13 AM »

Chris, do you think it might be the name of the forum section attracting the spambots? I noticed they seem to have a preference for it.
 Just an idea...

I've found it hilarious so far.

I think we're going to have to go with a minimal post count requirement to post in this forum.

Heh... make them all (except Technology) minimum of one; except the Newbie forum, since they're supposed to post an intro anyway, right?

One of the phpBB forums that I frequent just had a new type of spambot that was quite creative.  The bot goes and grabs an existing thread's first post and uses that text as the topic/text of its post.  Then, it appends its links to the bottom in 1pt font.  To top it off, it uses an existing user's screen name and appends a "_" to the end.

This increases the chances that the post will be "on topic" and people won't just ignore it.  They may actually investigate and follow a link.

Well at least that spammer put in a little effort. These fire-and-forget spammers are insulting. It is like they’re saying we aren’t even worth the trouble of being tricked.  :x

Does anyone actually buy from spammers anyway? I mean seriously, how do these guys make their money.

Unfortunately, people do buy from spammers. A couple of years ago, minature rc cars were the gift to give for Christmas. Many people who couldn’t find them in the stores resorted to buying them from spammers. Sometimes (actually quite often) when a small company first starts selling online, they get suckered into hiring an online marketing company. Luckily, this is a diminishing source of spam.

Then there are the online pharmacy and porn sites, it is pretty obvious why they use spam. The rest is usually identity-theft/phishing spam. They may only get a sucker per 100,000 emails/posts, but when you send out 100,000 a day…

Nigerian (I'm using this as a blanket term) Scammers are incredibly funny. Here's a particularily good response I got from one guy:

Quote from: Nick Savimbi

Hello my dear,

I am not seeking your pocket, because my late brother has alot of money and just because of that incedent that happens to him you want me to clean your ass before you help me, please all i can send to you is the United Nation's I D card whish they issued to me ion the camp here in Ghana as a political refugee from Angola.

I never knew you will want to use me as a rag before you will help me, just help me and we both will get rich or you stay and forget me so i can seek for a good and responsible person to assist me ok.

You have a nice day.
From Your friend,
Nick, as you wish to call me.

This is in response to some increasingly bizarre requests I was sending him. I don't know what amuses me more, his creepy use of 'my dear' or his line about cleaning my ass.

Where I work we set up 3rd party spam filtering for some of our clients for whom we host mail, and we have one client with 10 or 12 users that gets (from the reports I get) somewhere around 240,000 emails per week, 0.68% of which are legit "clean" emails.  The rest is all spam.

The sheer volume of spam out there is astonishing sometimes.

Our IT guy was saying yesterday that our spam filter stops more than 97% of the incoming mail.  3% of all the traffic is legit.

That amazes me.

Really ?

Just for this thread i checked our latest logs and 83% of our mail is spam. And that considering that the main language of our email is Dutch.

AHAHAHAHA!!!
Chris must have put the minimum post requirement in place. Our latest member, "equitycreditt" seems to have registered and left with nothing to say! How rude!
