The difference between Republican and Democrat
« on: April 07, 2007, 11:58:50 AM »

:w:Ever wonder what the real differences between the Republican & Democratic party are? In an allegorical fashion, here they are:

A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You're in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2346 feet above sea level You are at 31 degrees, 14..97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude.

She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be a Republican."

"I am," replied the man. "How did you know?" "Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost.. Frankly, you've not been much help to me."

The man smiled and responded, "You must be a Democrat."

"I am," replied the balloonist. "How did you know?"

"Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you're going. You've risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but, somehow, now it's my fault.  :-D

Hello new person. While you think that the pink text is funky, it makes my eyes bleed. Not everyone uses the default template so light pink on white background is not cool. How about staying away from the color tags?

How does the lady know that the guy in the boat is technically correct? Did she do any of her own research to come up with the conclusion that he was really right?

Nope, that's another reason to put her in the D camp!

I thought this story was a lot funnier when it was about programmers and managers.

Oooh snap! Actually if I was a camwhore (or knew anything about the unseemly business of camwhoring, which I don't because it's icky), I'd adjust the contrast on the camera, you can see too much detail at present.

rats... i thought there might actually be a decent political discussion in this thread...

last night some drunk guy insisted on butting into my conversation with a friend at denny's. he told me he was Republican, and gave me a look like he was either being profound or derisive. i didn't know quite how to respond, so i told him he could've told me he was a Democrat and i'd give him the same quizzical look... he looked at me dumbfounded and turned back to his coffee.

how long will it take before the average person realizes that the two parties are nearly identical?

Vote Democrat- it's easier than working
Vote Republican- it's easier than thinking

edit: gah... i didn't look at the date... sorry for the necromancy.

And get raped by a pig? I don't think so.

the way i see it, since the green party is the most influential (in terms of percent vote) political party next to the big two, and i hate having two parties, so why not vote for the green party? i figure they won't be able to do much legislative damage unless they get a majority; all the craziness should be taken out by checks and balances. i'd much rather have a crazy 3rd party than no 3rd party at all.

i've got the same complex as many of my peers- i know my vote doesn't count for shit. i still vote though, almost as a form of protest, although i'm not self-righteous enough to call it that. i just stay away from voting for the main parties. hell, i wrote in a mayoral vote for some hobo who campaigns while he begs...

If you think your vote does not matter, and you don't care to vote in accordance with your actual principles, and your vote is almost, but not quite a form of protest, and, if it were up to you, you would saddle us with hobos for mayors, then I think you suck as a voter.

my actual principles rest on the assumption that i have reasonably different choices. this is not the case. democrats and republicans both have views i agree with, yet they are embattled in party politics to such a degree that i have no way of knowing if they will stick to their principles, even if there's one that i agree with more. i'd rather cast my vote towards opening up the options more, so that there's a better chance of finding a candidate that i can mostly agree with.

Principles that rest on assumptions are not really principles. Assumptions can rest on principles, but principles that rest on assumptions are just more assumptions, and we all know what happens when you assume.

Also, writing in candidates is a futile protest, unless that candidate is Peter J. Shepherd.

Please remember that in November.

Unfortunately for a write in to even be counted they have to jump through numerous hoops in each of the 50 states.  Same goes for parties other than the duopoly.  The Greens and Libs aren't even on the ballots in all 50 states because of the bizarre requirements set up to remove any threat to said duopoly.

very true. i suppose that my only principle is to not subscribe to principles. i despise ideology... i try to think things through, and not rely on ideals, since there are situations in which nearly every ideal will lead to irrationality.

i tend to hold the federal elections a bit higher than local ones, even though they're even farther from direct democracy. i suppose that's a result of my socialization. i intend on researching all of the candidates before the primaries, so i can be sure i vote for the one that personifies my beliefs the closest.

quite... i have a feeling that won't change until lobbying is outlawed...
