Do you notice ads on the internet?

I've recently discussed this with various family members and virtually all of them either total ignore ads or outright block them. A few years ago I was the same way, but somewhere along the line I realized that ads are a great way of rewarding sites I enjoy.

Not only did I stop blocking ads, I even allowed myself to become interested in some of them and occasionally clicking them. Not only is it a way to support the site at no cost to myself, I occasionally find a good resource or a product I hadn't considered before (I'm not saying people should just go around clicking a bunch of links to generate revenue for a site, that can be detrimental rather than helpful).

I still have a pretty large hosts file, but I don't bother to add to it any longer.

At home, my hosts file is pretty big, but I can't do the same at work. I actually need to see the ads on our stations' sites.

I use a hosts file on all my machines (a big one that I downloaded from a site like this one) and of course browsers with popup blockening capability (like Opera).

Between those two things, I have all but forgotten that there even ARE ads on the internets.

And I like it that way.

I don't mind ads at all if they stay in one place, be quiet, don't take up half the page, and aren't so resource hoggish the page won't load. Those piss me RIGHT off. Other than that, I'm just about like milifist. I got an updated hosts file from ...somewhere; I don't remember (Google= HOSTS FILE) last time I re-installed; but I don't ever update it. Unless there's a new annoying one like I mentioned above.

I don't mind them, but generally sites that have popups flying at you and pissing you off in general don't have much on them that I care to expend the energy to read. I'm going to be starting a site soon featuring (at this point) my writing and would be interested in making a bit of money off it, but not if I'd have to piss off readers and interfere with things. My eye is so accustomed to seeing AdSense links that I don't even notice them anymore, maybe that's what I'll do.

Ads? On the internet? UNHEARD OF!

Yeah, I notice them but don't really follow up on them. Usually it's because either they're hawking products I don't care about or are using totally ineffective advertising methods like our very own Geeks.com banner ad.

I think the geeks.com is an affiliate program (Commission Junction). He gets a cut of whatever you buy coming in from the link.

The google adsense doesn't pay great, but it is very easy to use. You can stick the code almost anywhere and you don't need to get each site you use it on approved. Personally, I prefer Adbrite (yes, that is a referral link  ). It is a little more effort to setup, and it generally pays the same (using their network ads), but they also pay a little per-impression. Every few cents helps...

What I'd like to do is something like what Chris has going at teh Geekery by unobtrusively showing an ad for a company that produces things that he himself likes and most of the users seem to as well.

The Geeks.com one is about the only one that I see anymore.  But I haven't updated my hosts file in quite some time either.

The comp I'm on now came through the Geeks.com banner. Excellent place, decent prices, and FAST shipping.

What's bad about the hosts files available now is that they actually include the IPs and domain names of 1) our CMS, 2) our ad server - which doesn't always host true advertisements, and 3) our primary image server, which is primarily design (non-advertisement) images.

I have absolutely nothing against the Geekery (OMFGLOL!!1) Geeks.com banner.  I've bought stuff from there in the past, I look at the site pretty regularly, and the banner isn't obnoxious.

Well-targetted, unobtrusive marketing, in my opinion.

That's how I'd describe it. It's almost like a bookmark for people on this site instead of an ad, heh.

I look at them all the time whenever I am browsing sites. Though I'm not your average user given that I am constantly looking for new and creative ways to generate revenue via the web to help cover server costs as best as I can.

Personally, I have had pretty good success with Google AdSense. The key to AdSense is getting words that actually pay out more than 5 or 10 cents per click. There are words out there, believe it or not, that will pay upwards of 10 dollars per click. If you have a site that targets these ads and it also gets a lot of good traffic, you're in good shape. I have seen several payouts within the last year from Google for taking part in their AdSense program. Though I cannot actually say how much I actually earned, it's enough to make it worth while.

For those of you wondering, the Geeks.com banner ad is simply there in exchange for them donating stuff for me to give away to you guys. I thought this was a fair trade off, given that they offer products that I know we'd all love to have, and they're also willing to give me stuff to give away in exchange for something that doesn't cost me a thing.
