1. Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell
2. The Android's Dream by John Scalzi (reread)

4. The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris (reread)
5. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams (reread)
6. Beyond Einstein by Michio Kaku

Columbine was a surprise read for me.  I wasn't planning on reading it, but a friend of mine talked it up quite a bit.  Excellent book.

Currently reading:

  • Hyperspace by Michio Kaku
  • Chaos: Making a new Science by James Gleick
  • The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli
  • The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins

  • Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury (rereading)
  • The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer

Updated List:

I decided to put graphic novels/manga in their own list

Up to 25, starting over at 26 on the next addition.  23-24 above were read on the drive to Buffalo NY and back, well not while I was driving at least.

  • The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer

Read that in high school.  It's one of the best books on the subject out there, as far as I've seen.  Shirer is an incredible author.

Now:    The Iliad by Homer

I totally forgot to mention that I was reading Stupid Sexy Flanders and the Half Blood Prince.  Maybe I'll revive that old HBP thread.

So I started reading The Iliad and the part where Thetis was kneeling before Zeus asking for a favour reminded me of when Snape made the unbreakable vow.  Zeus bows his head to Thetis, knowing that once he does, he cannot go back on his word...but he doesn't know how he can accomplish what she wants.

I'm actually going to go for this list:

100 Best Modern Novels

I had a dry reading spell last century after they force-fed me all those books for school, but now I am ready for more. I figured I ought to start with the best ones then.

God, Mega Speed Reading... there's a scam I absolutely fell for! Back when TV shopping was still a novelty, audio CDs a luxury and I needed to pass exams - QUICKLY! :)

Socrates, how many books do you read a week? Do you speed read?

One to two, I read about 100 pages an hour and normally read for about 1.5 hrs a day total (before going to sleep and over breakfast).  Plus we canceled the cable a few months ago so the time I used to just veg out in front of the tv I'm either doing something productive or reading.  Which I guess brings my average up on the weekends.

I've always been a fast reader and I don't think it qualifies as speed-reading because I do read every word.  I think I'm so fast because I don't try to "say" every word in my head.

I had a boss who read the entire wall street journal every morning, in a very short amount of time.  That is speed-reading.

That's really impressive Socrates.  I get so many read because I cheat.  And my reading/listening has slowed down because I've stopped going to the gym.  Lose-lose!!!

I read anywhere from 15 to 30 pages an hour.  Fluff is about 30pph but stuff like Stephenson will be closer to 15pph.  I only get to read during my lunch break being I have a 2 year old and all my time away from work goes to him.

I've got to admit when you first started posting how much you were reading I got competitive.  "How in the hell is she reading that fast?"

And pb I do slow down for denser material, or speed up for engaging fun books.

I guess my dad made a point of reading to me every night even when I was really little.  It just stuck, I normally can't get to sleep without reading for a while first plus I pretty much read whenever I can during the day.

Laying out what I read in a list like really drives home how fantasy/sci fi centric my reading is.  I may have to hit that 100 novel link above and starting working on that.

I really want to join in this thread, but it feels sort of late to start.  Detta do you get your audio books off the net? Do you have a good source? I should make the time to read more. Instead of browsing forums and facebook I should dedicate my lunch hour to reading. I love to read and get engrossed really easily. MUST TRY HARDER.

Also although my spelling is still exceptionally bad, it was a hell of a lot worse when i was young. When i started writing I did that thing dyslexic people do where their writing is inverted which slowed down my progress as a child. It's improved dramatically because of reading and also the wonder that is instant messaging!

You can jump in this thread any time.  Make a goal for the rest of the year and start your list.

I get my audio books from 3 places.  The library, ebay (then I donate them to my school library for a tax deduction) and I belong to an audio book club ...www.simplyaudiobooks.com  Let me know if you're interested in a free two week trial because if I refer you I get an upgrade for a month.  Hmmmmm....now that I think about it, they probably don't ship over the pond. Sorry.

Anyone else that wants a free two week trial who lives in the US, let me know.  /solicitous whore

well here goes, I'm going to aim for 30 books. The first half of the year I spent most of my time partying and working so it was a little low and I was a bit rubbish. From what I can remember:

1. The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins
2. 1984 by George Orwell
3. Heroes : Charlie's Story
4. Down and out in Paris and London by George Orwell
5. The importance of being Earnest by Oscar Wilde (play)
