okay, after this summer I'll be attending an actual college with an actual dorm, and unfortunately an actual firewall'd network. naturally I want to get certain things, and access certain sites, through this network without the admins knowing exactly what it is. (obviously they might get a little suspicious about my using a single ip or whatever to access encrypted data, but whatever)

so: what would be the best way to accomplish these goals as well as possible, and can you direct me to a site you would recommend for some more in-depth instructions and/or help?

The best way to go would be to have a machine off-site to which you can remote, and do what you need to do from that outside box.

yeah, well, the only such candidate would be about a thousand miles away in kansas, and that box isnt even owned by me. (the school is in florida)

so i'm gonna have to settle for a regular proxy.

I've used Hotspot Shield which basically VPNs you into their gateway where you can browse in https from there. I'm not quite sure if it meets all the requirements, but here's the link just in case:

well, it seems to be working, because hulu is blocked. but I don't know if this hides anything from the admins

What is it that you're trying to access that is unsavory enough to be blocked by a firewall, AND that you're afraid to have anyone see?

Your college blocks hulu? The only thing we can't do is download torrents.

And, from my networking experience, they may be able to see that your traffic is encrypted but I don't think they will be able to see what you're actually browsing to.

They could even run a sniffer on your gateway router or right outside your room and not be able to see what kind of traffic it is besides encrypted VPN. At least, in my experience.

no the college doesn't block hulu, hulu blocks hss's ip's because it can let people outside the u.s. use hulu, whish is a no-no for contractual reasons. I'm not on campus yet.

and as for what I'm accessing, well, I'm just paranoid, you know? don't like being watched.

of course they can tell i'm using bandwidth, it's their bandwidth. and the fact that they cant tell what it means obviously would mean it's encrypted. it's the best I can hope for.

Yeah, so all the network admins I've ever known don't bother to look at someone's usage until it becomes unusual. Something tells me that they actually have better things to do than sit around and sniff your packets. Now, go and get yourself something that makes your usage anomalous in some way, I can pretty much guarantee that someone will take an interest and take it up as a personal challenge.

In terms of said challenge, something tells me they have better toys than you do and that they're likely to win.

Any of our resident network/sys admins have a different approach to network eavesdropping?

EDIT: This was my 1000th post and wasted it on this tripe!!!!!! I just KNEW I should have started another thread about the Vatican before I left the office...just to make my 1000th post a blazing rant about the top brass in the Catholic church being thoroughly evil bastards. Because something like THAT would have been worthy of a person's 1000th post.

it's just movies and stuff. it certainly isn't kiddie porn. and the boy's dorm is prettymuch dead center on campus, so I'm not gonna be picking up anyone else's wifi.

edit: weird thing. I decided I would encrypt my thumb drive (because I figured I might as well) and it has this meter on the front showing how full it is in increments of 10%. Well, during the formatting, every other slot darkened, rather than the whole thing emptying or whatever. I don't know if this is standard behavior for formatting, but it's still pretty cool.

edit#2 no, it isnt standard behavior, because it still looks like that after the formatting. probably some side-effect of the encryption algorithm. looks like something from star trek.

They might encrypt it at some point, but it's entirely decrypted by the time the mailman delivers it.

Well, all I know is that I don't need a decoder ring or anything to play it on my tv disc player thingee.

I'm advocating a much simpler life for you in the dorms. Just do without your PC for 4 years. Then, when you graduate, PCs will have neural compatible IO, and you'll be like, whoa, dude.
