Title: 3 xp questions! (not for noobs) :)
Post by: MrDrejer on November 13, 2009, 07:59:08 AM
Hey everybody. I am currently trying to make an xp all in one dvd with the versions:

xp pro x86 with sp3
xp pro x64 with sp2
xp home with sp3
xp media center edition with sp3
xp tablet pc edition with sp3

So, for the questions:

1. Some of the versions are in english and are not availeble in my language so therefore I have downloaded a MUI language pack which contains my language. As far I know I am supposed to make a silint install to integrate the language into the cd's but i dont know how.

If one of you know how to integrate the language into xp I would very much like some help. And if I get it done, will my own language then be 100 % integrated at first start up so that I dont need to change anything?

2. I need to pre-activate some of the versions because they need activation, and I cant find out how to do it so some help with that would be much appreciated.

3. I need to make a dvd which contains all the versions and some kind of menu to choose from like in Vista and 7. And once again I dont know how to make it.

Hope some of you have some expirience with theese 3 problems

Welcome to the Geekery, since your first post is in the sticky section, and not in the newbs section, I'm going to say that it is statistically likely that you did not do any research into what kind of forum this is. A confidence interval of 95% with alpha being .01 could easily be assigned to this for testing purposes.

1. A Microsoft support forum, google, and some reading could give you the answer on how to slipstream language packs onto a install CD.

2. Have you thought about what you're asking for here?

3. This isn't something someone can just tell you how to do. This is a coding project, perhaps you should hang out with some code monkeys for a bit and don't forget to bring the stereotypical offers to them to win acceptance, maybe Demo can advise you on what offers should be expected.

In short, go here (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=making+a+multi-install+dvd+for+windows+install)

Chaulis is old-school, from the Hackernetwork.com days, long long ago, in the Beforetime.  That "style" was a lot more pervasive over there back then.  :)

I actually went ahead and tried to buy the HN domain about 2 years ago, APlus.net said it was available. Turns out APlus is a very crappy registrant who was full of it, and sadly the squatter who owns hackernetwork.com increased his ownership till Jan 09(I did this back in 07). To top it off, APlus then went ahead and grabbed the domain for themselves and made it into a link farm. I have it reserved with godaddy but we'll see how that goes.

Back to the topic, this thread made me remember a rant I wrote up on HN once against some spammer. I really have no idea why I made a screen shot of it or still have said screen shot for that matter, but it brings back some fine memories.

Tell you what: If you ever get it, I'll spring for vBulletin and hit CG up for his last good backups.

Well shit, I don't think I would have fitted in around those parts. Little too lame for HN it seems.

Actually, it was fairly simple to be accepted at HN.  The basic rules were:

1) Post in the newbie forum first
2) Use English (or be Pepe or jlmr11)
3) Don't ask hacking questions
4) Be funny, or piss off

Beyond that, it was just a matter of liking the flavor of the site. Most people didn't.

Yeah, I'm lame and I was teh Queen of that place!!

I also find it ironic that he noob labeled his thread "not for noobs".

CG still is in control of the domain, actually. I think he's asking for several thousand for the domain last I checked.

Yup, his name's on it.

Maybe time to drop him a line, eh?

I never knew his real name. I also never bothered to follow up until today to be honest. Last thing I saw on the whois was a squatter company that shot back to aplus.net. Bad whois I suppose. Good to hear it's still in the family. I wonder if he'd be willing to turn it over to one of us and let us bring the old place back. I'd really like to see all that history.

If it comes to that, I'll spring for vBulletin and do the grunt work with the restore.

Deal. It would be an interesting project. I'm not a guru, but updating the code and getting the database compatible would be fun. Anyone know ballpark what HN cost per month in hosting?

Running a site like HN or The Geekery doesn't take much. Couple hundred for the software, and at most a couple hundred per year for hosting.

Yeah, but he wants a couple THOUSAND for the name.  I don't think he'll give it to us.

But who knows, maybe he doesn't care anymore.  Now that he hasn't been able to get his asking price for quite a while.

I'm kinda hoping that because it's some of the HN crew asking with the intent of re-opening the site, he would be willing for old times sake. I never got to know CG all that well, I came in as he was making less of an appearance on the site on such a regular basis so I really have no idea.

I've approached him about 8 months ago for the possible sale of the domain name, and he said he was asking for about 5000 USD for it. I think I offered him like 500 to 1000 max for it.

That reminds me. I've been thinking about switching to vBulletin again. Although it's not free, the feature set and support for the product is much better. SMF is getting to be a little dated if you ask me. Especially when you compare it to other web-based applications that are out there these days.

As long as it doesn't have that vBulletin bug that seems so common out there (where it marks threads as "read" even though you've never set foot in them.... that used to drive me batshit nuts on HN).  SMF so far has seemed rock solid in that respect.

I remember a bug like that at HN now that I think about it.

Every vBulletin board on which I have participated (even recently) has done that to some extent.  Some more than others, but they ALL do it.
