Entertainment / Goodbye, Paul Harvey
« on: February 28, 2009, 09:54:46 PM »
Paul Harvey passed away today at the age of 90 after 75 years in the broadcast industry.

I've been listening to Paul Harvey's segments on WABC for as long as I an remember.  I'm sad to see him go, but he had a great run.

So long, Mr. Harvey.

Statements from the president of ABC Radio and Paul Harvey, Jr.

My buddy Alex and I are doing a podcast called Pop Element.  As you may have guessed from the name, it's all about pop culture...movies, television, comic books, breakfast cereal, etc.  The first episode is up now, and I'd appreciate it if some of you guys would give it a listen and hit me with some feedback -- you know, what you thought about X, whether Y ran too long, whether you'd like to hear Z in the future...that kind of thing.

We're still kind of working out the kinks, but I think we've got a great rhythm going, and I'm really excited about recording the next episode.

Also, finding "podsafe" music for intros/outros/bumpers is really kind of a bitch.  If any of you musicians can help me out and send me some tracks, that would be really damn cool.

Anarchy / Stores With Amusing Names
« on: December 24, 2008, 06:15:35 PM »
Post the amusingly-named stores you've seen.

Near me, there's an outdoor supply store called "Take a Hike."  I always chuckle.

Either in Lambertville, NJ or New Hope, PA (they're across a bridge from one another and I always forget which side it's on) is a door-and-door-accessory store called "Knobs and Knockers."

The best one I've seen: a marble/granite place called "Get Stoned."

Nope, totally alive.  Thought I'd pop in and say my hello's, rather than just mysteriously start posting in other threads again.  It's been a while, but I'm back.

So, uh...yeah.  Hey.

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Laptop Screen
« on: April 10, 2007, 08:38:53 PM »
Blek, laptops sucks sometimes.

I have two ancient Thinkpad 390E's, one of which is just plain fux0red, the other working (but with a broken screen).  I want to swap the screens, but I have no idea how.  Google isn't being my friend, either.

Anybody know how to replace a screen?

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Tech Writers Wanted
« on: January 12, 2007, 08:16:41 PM »
As a Linux user and member of the open source community, I'm trying to give something back.  I've been entertained and informed by countless sites featuring Linux news and commentary, and I've always wanted to start a project of my own.

So I did.

LinuxLevity.org is my new baby.  I wish to provide news, opinions, how-to's and anything else that may prove interesting or helpful to fellow Linux users.

The bottom line:  I need your help.  I'm looking for writers to post how-to's, give opinions on different bits of software or distros, post interesting links, etc.  Let me know if you have any interest, and I'll set you up an author's account.

Anarchy / Shocked
« on: August 27, 2006, 11:09:27 AM »
A friend of mine died of a drug overdose yesterday.  I wrote a blog entry about it.

Has anybody had a similar experience?  I know that most geeks tend to keep away from drugs, but perhaps you can relate.

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Robocode
« on: April 13, 2006, 10:33:19 AM »
Has anyone played around with Robocode?  It's a neat little open source app, in which you code your own graphical robots and watch them kick ass (or get their asses kicked) against other bots in melee or one-on-one.  It's really quite fun.

Interview With the Jedi

He spoke into the tape recorder.  "I am a Jedi.  I know neither love nor hate.  I rely on the Force.  I am a friend of Wookiee, man and donut alike."  He waved at a tray of donuts.  "Many Bothans died to bring us these donuts."

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / C++ Help
« on: January 24, 2005, 11:47:27 AM »
I'm finishing up a C++ project due tomorrow (would've been today, but schools was closed due to shitty road conditions.) and I'm stuck at one point.

I need to use a switch statement, but I don't want to use a cin beforehand.  Is there a way to use getch() instead?  I remember being told I could in class, but I can't remember how.

Anarchy / Help, Guitar Players
« on: December 29, 2004, 10:07:28 AM »
I currently own three guitars, and I have a mandolin and a ukulele coming via UPS.  Within the next week, I'll have five instruments in a 10-by-12 room.  Things are a little cramped.

Any recommendations as to how I should store/display my instruments?  I usually just lean my guitars against whatever's handy, but it's starting to get a bit crowded.  Should I invest in wall hangers, or some sort of stand?

Anarchy / I Need a Hobby

So...as much fun as I've been having with crocheting and keeping an aquarium, I need a new hobby.  I thought about gardening, but it's too cold.  Any suggestions?

Anarchy / "Mark my words.."
« on: June 05, 2004, 06:05:21 PM »
"Mark my words, that horse is gonna win the triple crown!"

My World Studies teacher was wrong, I see, now that Smarty Jones has come in second in the Belmont Stakes.  Since the daughter of one of my school's teachers, a Ms Vannozzi, is the fiancee of the jockey, my whole school has Smarty Jones fever.  The whole thing just sickens me.

What is there to be so excited about?  A bunch of fucking horses run around a track and try to beat each other to the end.  What's so special about that?

What do make of this whole Smarty Jones business?

Anarchy / Picks
« on: May 31, 2004, 07:40:56 PM »
Those of you who play guitar, what sort of pick (gauge/brand/shape) do you prefer?  I've recently taken to metal Dunlop thumbpicks (model number 94530...I can't find much mention of them online, unfortunately.  Five for a buck at the local music shop.)

Anarchy / Embarassing Albums

What's the most embarassing album/CD/cassette tape you've ever purchased/been given?

For me, it's purchased: Frankie Yankovic and his Yanks Greatest Hits. (polka.  yes, I like it :P)
Given: A Pokemon cassette tape given to me by my great aunt.  Sheesh.

Anarchy / The Things You See...
« on: May 24, 2004, 06:02:33 PM »
Today, for what may be the first time in my life, I genuinely felt sorry for someone.  I saw a man standing outside a deli today, thumbing through lottery tickets.  The left side of the man's face was normal, but most of the right side was horribly disfigured.  His right eye was about three inches lower than the left, like some sort of real-life Picasso painting.  His cheek drooped down in what I can only describe as sheets, like wax dripping down a candle.  The cheek ended about two inches past the chin in large, bulbous tissue formations.  The whole right side of his face looked a melted wax figure.

Whenever I see someone with such a disfigurement, it makes me wonder what their life must be like.  How do you function in society when people find themselves unable to look upon you?  Wouldn't being around people constantly remind you of your deformity?

Apparently the man is well-known around my town.  Many just refer to him as 'the Face.'  Something about that sickens me.  I wonder how the Faces and the John Merricks of the world maintain the courage to keep going.  I know I sure wouldn't be able to.

I felt angry towards myself as well, because when I saw the Face, the only thing I could think after the initial disgust was "Heeeey, you guuuuuys!"  How is it that I can be so cruel without trying?

There are many things about the world, I find, that I don't understand.  I'm not sure I like that.

Anarchy / What the Crap?
« on: May 18, 2004, 12:32:42 AM »
Today, while standing on the lunch line, I went digging through my pockets for a few quarters.  I pulled out four...or so I thought.  One of them felt oddly octagonal as I idly thumbed it waiting to get to the head of the line, and it turned out to be a 1979 Susan B Anthony dollar.  For some reason or another, this really rattled me.

I drink Folger's.  I watch reruns of Family Ties while eating Swanson frozen dinners and reading Popular Mechanics.  My room is covered in Dukes of Hazzard and Star Trek memorabilia.  I hum Lynyrd Skynyrd tunes as I walk home from the bus stop, and I own a Fender guitar.  I bathe myself in American pop culture, yet this simple piece of currency completely shook me.  Why was I so unfamiliar with it?  What was it about a simple, silvery coin that bewildered me so much?

When I got to the front of the line to pay, I looked at the cashier and muttered, "Will you...will you take a Susan B Anthony dollar?"  "Sure, hon!" was her reply.  She took my money without a second thought.  If it was good enough for her, why did it still shake me?

What is it about the Susan B Anthony coin that freaks me out?  I'd never used one before; never even seen one.  What does that say about me, a man who surrounds himself with Americana?  Before spending it, I held it gingerly between my thumb and forefinger, like it was a poisonous spider.  A tiny piece of regular currency completely threw me off, simply because it should have been familiar, but wasn't.

This scares me.
