My college text books are made of gold!
« on: January 23, 2006, 05:29:01 PM »

Here's a nice little rant...

"What the fuck" is what I say when I'm on campus buying my books for the semester. How does a book wind up costing me 160 dollars?

The best part is when you go to sell them back. You ask them, "How much will I get for this when I turn it in?" and they reply with "20 dollars." Two days later for find your book for sale for 80 dollars.

I had text rental at UWSP, then came to UW-Madison and discovered the financial horrors of having to buy texts. Being an English major (many paperback books that resell for about $2, with the occasional hardcover anthology) was just as bad as being a science person ($120 texts for which you maybe got $50 back).

The one book I paid $80 for and got nearly all of it back on was the one book I wanted to sacrificially burn. Go figure.

I can't even afford the books for this coming semester. I'll probably have the cash for them about a week into class.  :(

That's about right for me, too. And I'm only taking two classes.

If I had a dollar for every book that I bought but never broke the binding on, I'd buy us all lunch.

Have you checked www.campusbookstore.com or www.campusbooks.com for prices?

The last couple of classes had really cheap used ones from the Amazon sellers.  Ebay is another possibility as is Craig's list.

Some of my classes actually have books that were specifically made for the college itself. This way they have specific pages in there that the professor uses.

The odds of finding one of these books used online is slim, and the odds of getting a book used from the bookstore on campus are pretty slim as well, since they put out 10 at a time - effectively creating their own supply and demand system.
