Hi there. I am Phife. I am 26, working on my Ph.D. (geeky enough for you?), in a relationship (yes, with a woman), and tired as hell right now (so hopefully this will make sense!).

Here goes:

I like to read. I read CS Lewis, Tolkien, Palahnuik, Arthur C. Clarke, R.A. Salvatore, King, Elaine Cunningham, Terry Brooks, N.T. Wright, I. Howard Marshall, Raymond Brown, Robert Sawyer, and lots of other stuff too.

I like to write. I write non-fiction (academic religion stuff) mostly, but I have been increasingly interested in fiction. I am working on three projects right now, one of which will be published next year. And no, I will not tell you the title or my real name. I have enough stalkers as it is!

I like music. I play the guitar (acoustic blues mostly) and I try to sing (but I suck). As far as what I listen to...it runs the whole gamut: System of a Down, Dianna Krall, KoRn, Brahms, Metallica, Montgomery Gentry, T.I., John Mayer, Wu Tang, Stevie Ray Vaughan (my all time favourite), amongst many, many more.

I live movies. My favourite is The Princess Bride. Tied for second are the first Matrix, Braveheart, and Hoosiers. Tied for third is anything with hot chicks in it that get naked. Tied for fourth is any movie about sports.

Which leads me to this: I like sports. My teams are the Cowboys and the Cubs...though I follow all the other (US) sports and teams religiously. I am not excited about Super Bowl XL at all if you are curious...but Pittsburgh is going to win.

Hmm...I guess that's about it. I can be a post whore...hope that's okay here...and is anyone else interested in sports around here? If so, we need a thread!

Haha, Cowboys eh? I'm not that big into football, but I do the fantasy football thing. I like to watch college basketball (UK!) and NASCAR. And baseball, although I'm not as into it as I used to be. Go Yanks! I'm not a bandwagon fan, I'm actually from Long Island.

What are you getting your HpD's in?

My Ph.D. will be in religion.

I picked Carolina and Denver in the Conference Championship round, which means that Pittsburgh probably won't win b/c I picked them (yes, I'm that important!).

I've been with my S.O. for 4+ years now. We might as well be married.

And about Salvatore: I got into him as a teenager. I like Drizzt...but my favourite was Wulfgar. Then he kills Wulfgar...people complained...and he brought him back. This made me mad. So I didn't read him for like 7 years. Then I saw the Demon War books. I had no idea what they were. I read the first one and was hooked. Why? Monks. God I love monks. Look at my av for pete's sake. So in short, I agree that Bob's FR's stuff is trite...but his Corona books are great. His last one, The Highwayman, was brilliant and a half!

Not comparative religions (though I find that fascinating!), my Ph.D. will be in New Testament. I am a Christian, but my life's work will be the academic study of the New Testament and teaching it at a university.

My dissertation proposal is exploring how Paul used eschatology to reinforce ethical demands that he put on congregations to whom he wrote. Thats a mouthful!

On a side note, I hope to be a published creative writer as well. I am a Renaissance man...I think.

As a lifelong atheist, I've always gotten odd looks from people when they find out how interested in religion I am.

However, my interest is academic, not philosophical. I would love to go back to school and major in Theology.

Of course, it'd be a pretty pointless degree for me... but academically speaking it's one of my biggest interests.

Insert snarky, grumpy ex-catholic atheist's comment about the contradictory nature of a live-in and apparently sexual relashionship with a woman and a christian religious outlook on life here.

Aside from that, welcome and stuff. I think this is some kind of art forum, but I haven't really figured that out yet.

@Demo: I have sometimes wished to do the same thing; you know, it's never to late to go back, but at some point it almost becomes trite. I think you ought to go for it though. In fact, one up that and go to seminary afterwords!

@TheNewGuy again: I just thought I'd throw in that I'm also working on a Ph. D, although I am in the vicinity of 60 so my geek factor might be negated. However, mine is in the wonderful and useful realm of antiquarian mathematics. My dissertation regards the possible biases in his examination of antiquated mathematics, and also explores as a result of that the theories inherent in Sumero-Akkadian mathematics and metrology.

It's a very useful degree for a lifelong professional musician like myself, and what can I say, it gets the ladies.
