Title: Christmas Travel Plans?
Post by: Dark Shade on December 06, 2004, 06:23:29 PM
It's that time of year again, the time when families cling to one another for warmth. The time when 24-hour driving schedules must be made for travel to the in-laws. The time where last minute shoppers are forced to kill to survive the hell of the crowds at Wal-Mart, Chapters and others.

My favourite time of the year.

This year, I'm planning to drive up to visit the folks in northern Alberta. Quite the trip I'm making. All in all, it's not that long of a stretch, but it'll be damn cold on the way up there. That's just the way it is in Canada, never a dull moment what with the weather keeping you rubbing yourself each and every day. Hopefully the money I saved for gas should suffice, I've already blown quite a large sum on gifts this year. However, I do aim to please. I have a nephew who I love spending time with, and it'll be great to see him again. If I'm back before the new year, I'll consider myself blessed. Being able to spend so much time with family is great, regardless of how long you need to drive to get there. I'm not one to hate my family either, I rather enjoy our get togethers.

That's my story, for now at least. What's everyone else doing this year? If we survive, we can swap stories.  :D

I'm driving in the opposite direction.  I'll be heading to see the 'rents on the west coast of Floriduh... just north of Tampa.

From where does your trip originate?

The trip would originate smack in the center of Alberta: Calgary.

I've never mentioned how much I loathe Calgary, have I?

Christmas Eve is spent with my in-laws in Milwaukee. We go there the day of or the night before, and head back the night of the 24th. Then, Christmas Day, we drive the 2.5 hours up to my parents' and spend at least two nights there.

I don't have to worry about presents for anyone but my grandmother. Joy. Oh, and some $10-15 gender-neutral, age-neutral (most of the cousins are at least 13, but Dave's teh oldest "kid") present for a giant put-the-presents-in-a-pile-then-pick-one tradeoff. At least I won't get a box of nuts or some dumb cheapass present from his parents this year.

Fun stuff. Sounds like you'll be kept occupied over the holiday season.

Personally, I wouldn't want nuts either.

Actually, a box of nuts would be better than their present last year:

One of those infomercial products, a hair towel thingy. Just dumb. I know she got it on clearance at the Kmart closeout. Then again, she got her own son's presents there, too.

And they go to Vegas at least once a year.

No, I'm not bitter.

That's...just not right. Something should be done about it. And with the ability to go to Vegas once a year, you would think they'd take the time to shop for a more appropriate gift.

I'm going to wake up just in time to greet visiting relatives at the door, entertain them for a couple of hours with my sparkling wit (I polish it frequently, just not online) and then slink away somewhere with my girlfriend and play with whatever cool crap we get each other.

(from my bed to the front door ---> travel!)

I've done enough travelling this month already, so I will be spending the holiday away from the family this year :)

You'd think, but they're greedy, selfish bastards. *shrug*

I'll be back in Vegas again, visiting family. Work gives me a week and a half off paid, without using up any vacation time, so I'll be up there for awhile.

I don't know what's gonna happen to me this year for Christmas.  It looks like I might have to drive my truck up to New York by myself.  That will suck.

But hey, once I get there it'll be awesome as usual with my family.

Not really traveling for Christmas.  But the day after we're heading to Fort Meyers FL.  Visiting the wife's sister and all getting on a boat to Key West.  See y'all after the first of the year when that time comes.

Gotta spend some time in Margaritaville while we're there.  Woot!!!!

Christmas morning at home, then down to my parents for lunch, but that's only a 25 minute drive. We did all our travelling at Thanksgiving.

Sounds like you all have some travelling to do one way or another, even if it is just from your bedroom to the front door.

If I'm not able to say it closer to the actual day, Merry Christmas everyone!

This year, I'm working on Christmas day, Boxing day, and new years day. Normally I'd be upset that I couldn't be near my family, but they're all over the place, and since we did the 15 hour drive from Kelowna to Saskatoon last year (over Roger's pass, which is almost more dangerous than the Coquihalla in winter!!), I think I can take the double time and a half I'll be receiving. I'll miss my brothers and sister and mom and her dog, but that's alright. It's completely self inflicted since I'm the one that moved away.

The only good thing about it is that all my friends are working all those days as well, so at least I'll be in some good company ;)

If forced to live there, I would resort to digging a hole to the ends of earth to get out. The neighborhood, the city, the state... not reccomended.

Looks like my travel plans have changed!  I found plane tickets from Richmond to NY for $120!  It'll probably cost me that much just in gas to take my truck up there so, I went for it.

Meanwhile, I found tickets from Charleston to NY for $140.  I got them too.   :D

Well... I'm in Fla.

If you're weird and you want to read about my boring trip down here, go to my wesbite.

When I'm bored here, I'm redesigning my wesbite.  Lots of fun... right?

How many inches of snow are you supposed to get in the next couple of days TD?
Title: Christmas Travel Plans?

hard to tell.  we aren't looking at the usual lake-effect crap, but a nice little battering ram of a storm for the next few days.  I think they said between 6" and 12", maybe more, depending on what part of the city you're in.  and it's gonna be bitter and windy.  like i said.... oh fucking joy.

Sounds like the weather report here.  Eight to twelve tonight, around zero degrees by Friday.  These damn hillbilly's around here can't drive on dry roads much less something with snow on it.

Surely they'll have the interstates cleared by Sunday.  Bye bye Louisville, hello Key West.

It's butt-ass cold here. It's making the ponds freeze over nicely, though. Amateur hockey season has begun!

Update:
Now they are saying 10 to 15 inches.  It'll be pretty for Christmas but what a mess it's going to make.

With the wind chill right now we're at -6. Butt-ass cold indeed. Wind chill advisory for a large portion of the state.

We ended up with 10 inches total.  About 4 then 2 of ice with 4 more on top.  But on the other side of town there's 16 and right across the river 2 feet.  I-65 north bound is totally screwed.

The snow ain't so bad but the ice in the middle makes it a bitch to get off the drive.
