Anarchy / Happy New Year
« on: December 31, 2007, 10:17:04 AM »
A few hours to go 'till the new year here, but i wanted to wish every member of this forum Happy New Year, and to say that i'm looking forward to reading your posts next year. Now off to the party.

If anybody is from Australia or New Zeeland, then this might come a little late.

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Certifications
« on: November 11, 2007, 03:47:21 PM »
In a few weeks i'll be changing my job. The pay is not great (still better than the current one), but they get lots of money from the state/european funds for training, so i'll stay for 1-2 years here and try to get as much training from them as i can. Already they are sending me on a RH133 course and RHCT certification for the job.

So i got a few questions for you, as i (broadly) know how this stands in my country but not how it's in the US and other countries:

How important are usually the certifications vs. work experience and knowledge (demonstrable with a test at the interview)?

What courses/ certifications do you suggest? I'm a sysadmin with some network admin experience, trying to go only for Linux. Should i go for RHCE or are the CompTIA Linux+, Network+ and Security better, since they they are distribution-neutral? Or are there any other courses/certifications that i'm not aware of?

Is CCNA certification important? I've taken courses 1-4 but i didn't take the certification exam. Do the employers usualy care for this?

Entertainment / Aren't psychics great?

You'd think a poor psychic that has to do phone readings to get by in life would love to take up Randy's million dollar challenge, but seems like no tackers yet...

Entertainment / Die Hard 4 - Will it die already?

One of the best researched movies i've seen in a long time.

A lot of interesting scenes/ plot devices that geeks everywhere will surely appreciate, i'll just mention the one where  somebody from the other coast breaks into a server. The guy at the keyboard types a little at random and we get a pop-up:  IP:10.252.27.112, Name:XXX XXXX.
And on other ocasions we have IPs like 456.x.x.x and so on.

Well, at least it wasn't 127.0.0.1

Besides that, great slo-motion crashes and explosions. If they only would cut the dialogs out (and the great acting) ...

Hi. I've read some posts in this forum ind i've found the posters realy funny (and some inteligent  :-D ), so i'll give it a try.

Since there's a special section for introductions, i'll use it, with the very original thread title "hello". I'm a sysadmin/ help desk worker, pretty much bored right now, and english is not my native language, so please forgive me if i miss-spell something.
