Anarchy / MAN THE SEARCHLIGHTS! THE AVATAR HARPOONS!
« on: August 03, 2010, 09:29:41 PM »
Okay, so it's nothing actually that exciting, but I just noticed that I'd lost the full-size version of my delightful avatar (masterfully crafted for me by Lacerda in the time before time).

The attachment in that thread no longer works - do any magic admins or Lacerdas have a way of getting me a copy?

Also: Hi folks!

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / New Camera
« on: August 08, 2006, 02:14:45 PM »
So I've slowly been getting more and more into digital photography over the years, and although I love my cute little camera, it is really only useful for snapshots as it gives me very little control over the photos I take and has a very small sensor, and is prone to a great deal of noise in dark lighting conditions.

So what I'm looking for is a Digital SLR or an "almost SLR" camera (a flexible all in one unit). I was hoping you folks might have some insight.

Here are the things that are important to me:

Good aperture depth / large sensor for lower light photographs
Image stabilization because my hands are far from rock-steady
The ability to have wide angle OR telephoto style shots (only possible in an all in one with a really special lens - so not a huge priority)

I'll be doing a lot of work on night shots, natural/low light shots, and some studio shots (yes, I'll drag in good lights from time to time).

Anyone have any suggestions or good sites to look at?

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Hacksering... For a class!
« on: February 09, 2006, 07:50:22 AM »
So I know it's taboo to ask for this sort of support:

HI CAN U PLZ HLP ME HAX MY GFS HTOMAIL?!!! KTHXBYE!!1

However, I have a computer security class assignment that some of you folks might be able to help with.

So here is what's up:

Teams of two in the class each have control of a box on a little private network. We each picked different distributions of linux to install on them, and got ourselves some little servers up and running. The professor's machine is the sample user's machine, from which he attempts to use the services we provide from our servers. Every four or five days we have to offer another type of service (FTP, HTTP... etc) as he assigns, or sometimes we just have to make changes to those that we already offer.

Now, here is the challenge:

We've had a week of bloodshed free setup time before the chaos begins, but starting today we get to start trying to screw with the other group's boxen. The point is to secure our servers well, but to make sure we can still provide the services we're supposed to. We are supposed to be as evil as possible, but we get points off if another group knows what we did and who we are.

So my questions are the following:

I know some of you here are pretty solid linux users/admins. Do you know of any dirty little tricks or resources I should look into for the offensive side of this exercise? (My job is offense, but I'm of course helping secure our box too)

and

Any suggestions for how I should make sure my box is secure? I've been doing plenty of reading, but if you have any good resources, let me know. (We ended up getting Arch Linux for ours [no two groups could have the same]). Also, what do you suppose would be the best way to track what other people are doing to us (log file interpreters perhaps)?

PS: I know its been a while since I've been back here. Taking six courses a semester really kills the free time. I miss you guys!

Anarchy / The Shop-Vac Laptop
« on: September 01, 2005, 01:24:33 AM »
I work in tech support... Just recently I saw something that made my soul burn. Here is my story (Warning: dumbed down for some of my other friends who aren't so... savvy):

The other day I was sitting in the caf minding my own business when I noticed a rather loud an obnoxious young lady moving her laptop over to another table with her friends. First, she carefully put down her Vera Bradley handbag that was the both the same size and pattern as my grandmother's smelly old couch.

Next, she tried to set down her laptop with one hand and set down her cup of soda with the other. Apparently she was too busy bellowing to her friends to pay attention to that whole hand-eye coordination thing. Her soda went tumbling over RIGHT NEXT TO HER LAPTOP. Of course, being the incredibly reactive and responsive person she is, this young lady was very quick to jump back and gawk at the mess she made of course making strange effeminate yelps of shock and disgust. Now, because she was so quick to react she managed to get absolutely no soda on her cute little 4 inch tall skirt, however the footprint of her laptop was in a puddle of soda.

Her model of laptop has the common design of two large intake fans on the bottom which blows cool air eventually over the processor and video card. Needless to say, the second the puddle hit those intakes the laptop just started sucking up soda. It sounded like a SHOP VAC! About 10 seconds later the machine shut itself off and the slurping sound stopped. About 30 seconds after that the young lady realized that her computer had, in fact, stopped working. I hope that the fans just slowed down enough to make the thing auto-power-down.

I can't wait to see this one at work.

Below I have included an illustration for dramatic effect just in case you were having trouble visualizing the situation:

PS: I miss you teh geekery!

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / New Computer!
« on: November 02, 2004, 08:11:24 PM »
So the laptank sold, and after tapping into some other financial resources I finally bought my beast:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
ASUS K8T800 Chipset mobo
2x512 Corsair PC3200 in Dual Channel mode
PNY GeForce 6800 GT
Lian Li PC-V1200 Case

Other parts ignored because they aren't impressive.

And I KNOW my case is seriously overpriced, but I'm sick of cheap ass cases. It's time to buy me one that will last.

Anyone think I could have done better price/performance?  (no, old, free computers do not count)

Now to wait for it to ship....

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Selling my Laptank!

Sager 5670 Notebook:
I bought this computer a bit over a year ago, and now that I am more settled in at college, I do not need this kind of power in a portable machine.  The computer is still in great condition with the exception of some minor wear on the wrist plate from using the built in keyboard and having my wrists resting on the plate.

This has been a wonderful laptop, I just no longer need a portable computer.  It plays games reasonably well by today's standards, and I must have logged 100s of hours playing Call of Duty and UT2004 on this thing.  It performs very well with the most recent Radeon Omega Drivers.  Other than the numerous LAN parties it has been to, this has not left my desk in the last year, and if could afford not to sell it, I would most certainly keep it.

Sager also has some of the best tech support I have seen.  The owner of the company I bought it from (pctorque.com) posts on the Sager Forums (http://notebookforums.com/).  I had a few problems early on when getting set up, and they were a great help.

Specs:
Sager 5670 Notebook: 5670
Display: SXGA 1600 X 1200 15" LCD
Color: Standard Grey/Blue
Processor: 3.06 GHz P4 533 FSB w/Hyperthreading
Video: Radeon 9000 128MB DDR
RAM: 1024MB (2 DIMMs)
Hard Drive: 60GB 5400RPM
Media Drive: 8X DVD/24X10X24 CDRW Combo Drive
Modem: 56K V.90
Network Card: 10/100 NIC (a little flaky at times, so 3com PCMCIA NIC included)
Keyboard Layout: USA
Floppy Drive: 3.5" Floppy Drive
Battery: Primary Li-ION battery pack
Dual Battery Setup: Li-ION battery for Bay 2 (battery still lasts about 2 hours)
Wireless Network: 54MBPS 802.11G Wireless PCMCIA
OS: Windows XP Pro w/SP1 included
Case: The Leather case that shipped with it
Warranty: about 3 years left of a 4 year extended warranty (started 8/03)

Make me an offer.  Make sure it has at least 4 significant digits before the decimal point. ;)

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / LAN Parties
« on: October 07, 2004, 12:46:53 AM »
Okay, so I run (weekly) LAN parties here at Bucknell University and recently they've hit the 20+ person mark.  I need to start taking a lot more things into consideration, and my equipment is starting to not be enough.  I mean, I always make sure everyone doesn't just plugstrip chaon themselves down the row, but now I'm starting to deal with mapping the power, and making sure no breaker is gonna get overloaded.

That, and my networking setup works okay, but I've only got one 24 port 10/100 switch, and a couple of 10/100 24 port shitty hubs, a 5 port linksys switch, and my little netgear router to assign pretty IPs.

So if anyone has any ideas of what I should think about doing, or what I might not be thinking of, let me know!

Oh yeah... Hardware... I need a bunch of things for my setup, so any donations or good deals on the following would roxxor my boxers:

-Network Switches (100 base or better)
-Network Cable (CAT 5e or better)
-Old server boxes or parts
-Gigabit anything (i need another NIC)
-A KVM switch of any kind
-An AGP graphics card better than this streaky 2 MB crapling i have in my server
-And any other random shit.

So yeah, I know all of those are a stretch, but if anyone has some random crap, or sees a good online deal, let me know.

It's gonna be a beast.  Current names in the running (THOR is my server box):

Gungnir
Odin
Raina
Fria
Mjollnir
Fatty
Skeletor
Corn Dog
Poopsicle stick
Meat Popsicle
HUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRR!!!111

Any ideas?  If you give my good ones, i'll send it to the polls, and then completly disregard the result when actually deciding.

If you guys want specs, you need to help me sell my laptop first, because it will depend entirely on that.

Even though it will cost like 5 billion bucks to get one, it means the old ones will go down.

Anarchy / Yarr, LAN Party
« on: June 22, 2004, 10:06:53 AM »
So yeah, dude.   I'm finally going to a real LAN party the end of July.  It's in Virginia at some 4 star hotel, and I'm going to be so caffeinated for 4 days that you wouldn't recognize me.  It is called "Tribal-Wars" and there will be an east coast party in VA and a west coast party in Cali.  Anyway, its all centered around the timeless classic: Tribes. Of course we will not just play the original, but also Tribes 2 and a nice little free ride into the private beta of Tribes Vengeance.

There are 400ish people signed up for Tribal-Wars east, and like 200ish signed up for Tribal-Wars west.

The hours of the event are:
-Day one - 5pm until 4am
-Day two - 10am until 4am
-Day three - 10am until 4am
-Day four - 10am until 2pm

This is all of course along with cases and cases of FREE BAWLS in the game room.

Feel free to check out the info yourself at:
http://www.tribal-wars.com/

and look! I'm on the roster!

If anyone else from the forum is going, let me know!

(goddamnit, I'm excited)

Anarchy / Surviving College
« on: December 01, 2003, 10:31:45 AM »
Just wanted to drop back in to say hi, because I've been MIA for awhile...  I'm surviving college, as it seems.  For my engineering course they’re actually making me read a novel.  Isn't that odd?  The funny thing is that it isn’t that bad of a book for required reading.  It's called "The Cuckoo's Egg" by Cliff Stoll.  For those of us who only remember choking on our own vomit and sippie cups, bibs, bigwhells and playing lode runner in the 80s, its an amusing glance back at the computer shit that I missed when it was current technology, but now we just sort of know as that info that dates us geeks.  It’s like carbon dating... "What was your first programming language and OS?"  Doesn’t work that well because my dad had me use everything as a little tot, but you know the deal.

SO! How is everyone?!?  I talk to heavyjay every now and then using some lame messaging service run by some division of Time-Warner... but other than that I haven’t talked with most of you in quite a while.  So, Chris! How are things... how may times has the server gotten hosed since I last was around?  How about Lacerda, still rapping?  …or wrapping… it is that time of year.  Demo!  Are you still eating poor insignificant posters?  I hear they’re good with syrup.  Oh, and someone actually said lesbian and robot in the same sentence around me the other day Detta…  what else.  Hey BinoPseudo… how are things? DARK SHADE!  You are still the only quote in my broken image sig.  That is quite an honor, I assure you.  Oh, and I remember you, frozen shade dude, but never really actively yelled at you or agreed with you in these forums… so I don’t really know you yet.

But that’s most of the people I wanted to say hi to that I have seen still active around here… sure there are others, but whatever

So yeah… college is fun, but its like the weeks just disappear.  Therefore I spend all weekend awake hanging out with my friends and inhaling bottles of Bawls and playing way to many games, and playing way too many pranks on the public safety rent-a-cops.

Right… speaking of which, I need to go to class soon here.  Good to “see” y’all.

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Weird IE Problems
« on: October 05, 2003, 04:43:37 PM »
I'm posing this question because i'm desperate and because i know there a quite a number of you out there who really know your shit. Tell me what you think:

So I can open most pages in IE, but some (like winamp.com for instace) i can only get the top navigation chunk of the site... there isnt any content whatsoever. It just sits there pretending to continue loading, and goes nowhere. I also have the common problem of an error popping up saying there was a runtime error and asking if I want to debug... and this is not just crappy sites, but sites that nobody else has problems with. Any ideas? This is driving me nuts!

As the site says:

GAME OVER!
Dear Fellow TrickHeads:
I have some very bad news for you all. For the past couple of months zippotricks.com has been under tremendous scrutiny from various US groups, organizations and even political figures concerning the potential dangers involved with tricking.

Although I personally don't agree with these concerns, we have reached a point where we are left with no other alternative other than to shut zippotricks.com down, effective immediately.

Ever since I started zippotricks.com back in 1996 the site has experienced a massive growth both in content, volume and traffic. None of this would have been possible without your help and contribution. We sure had some good times!

I appreciate all of the friends I've made over the years and look forward to our paths crossing once again.

All the best,
