I always thought vegetarians are an evil lot set on world domination, and now you can see it too.

Don't even get me started on painters...

My spiritual adviser told me Dawkins et. company already do that.
And he's never wrong.

But the main difference is that if you work at a civilian office that sucks you can always try to get another job, or quit first and then get another job if you have a little cash put aside. You can even punch your boss in the nose if it gets really bad  :-)

I understand that the military would have a very big problem with any of those things.

However another part of me says this is wrong, to live for ever is to deny the chance to see the other side of that opaque wall that is death.

Do you think that rotting or being burned might be interesting experiences? Even if I'd still had a functionally nervous system and brain to experience them, i'd pass that pleasure.

Anyway, it's not possible to live forever. Even barring accidents and suicide, all you can hope for is the lifespan of the universe, so you'd only live until the Big Crunch or the heat death of the universe. Not bad though  :-D

If you're interested in reading more "serious" SF, try the dude that BizB linked to earlier, Vernon Vinge. Or other "hard" SF. While i enjoyed reading Dune a long time ago, other writers wrote more interesting stories about this topic, and they have more idea what they're talking about. For example V.V. is a programmer. And Dune is pretty much Fantasy, not science-fiction.

Skynet and 1984 are works of fiction. Skynet (i suppose you're talking about the Terminator series) is also a stupid example of Frankenstein complex.

The atom bomb was scientist's work taken by politicians and military and used in a certain way, not pure science. And anyway, even about that one can argue that it ended a war that could've kept going on for a long time with the result of much more lives lost, and that it prevented another later on (USSR-USA).

progress so = good or better  :slap

I'm so gonna upload myself the first chance i get (well, not the first chance, i'll wait a little to be sure that the interface works ok, but as soon as possible).
Now let's get started on the work on the necessary hardware.

If that will be proven not to work, then i'm for AI's as smart as possible, the Matrix/Frankenstein scenario is pretty stupid. I just hope i'll live long enough to see the singularity.

I really don't understand why so many people are against any progress, always yelling "We should not play god" about everything. There probably were a few of those the first time someone started to wear animal fur to keep them warm: "Sonny, if God wanted you to be warm, He would've given you more hair!" and "I don't care that this fire thing is the new fad, i'm not having it near my cave!".

2girls1cup?

I hate you.

WHY DID I GOOGLE THAT?

Hey, this reminds me of all the times I used to sneak goatse links into 'hacking site' URLs that all the wanna be hackers back when HN was running would ask about.

Ha! I googled it first, but since nobody responded to my last thread i decided to live other unsuspecting forum members to do it again.

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Certifications
« on: November 11, 2007, 03:47:21 PM »
In a few weeks i'll be changing my job. The pay is not great (still better than the current one), but they get lots of money from the state/european funds for training, so i'll stay for 1-2 years here and try to get as much training from them as i can. Already they are sending me on a RH133 course and RHCT certification for the job.

So i got a few questions for you, as i (broadly) know how this stands in my country but not how it's in the US and other countries:

How important are usually the certifications vs. work experience and knowledge (demonstrable with a test at the interview)?

What courses/ certifications do you suggest? I'm a sysadmin with some network admin experience, trying to go only for Linux. Should i go for RHCE or are the CompTIA Linux+, Network+ and Security better, since they they are distribution-neutral? Or are there any other courses/certifications that i'm not aware of?

Is CCNA certification important? I've taken courses 1-4 but i didn't take the certification exam. Do the employers usualy care for this?

Yup, just organically challenged.

Yup, an intelligence test when you make an account.

Isn't filtering stupidity elitist?
Yes. Yes, it is. That's sort of the whole point.

Oh crap, if existing users must take it i'm outta here.

41
zOMG!!111!!!!

Nah, won't work, idiots are very smart at beating this kind of filters, we still need a serious AI to filter stupidity.
Or better yet, intelligent people.

Nothing is sacred. Even those who arrange and design shrubberies are under considerable economic stress at this period in history.

Tomorrow I'm going to a Halloween party.  I'll be wearing a pink shirt, a pig snout and pig ears, play money pinned to my shirt, a glove on my right hand marked "the invisible hand" and some pennies in my pocket, which I'll bring out every once in a while and say "Look!  I make cents (sense)!!"  Anyone guess what I am??

Adam Smith?

Oh yes, we need the big record companies, otherwise we wouldn't have great stars like Britney Spears.

I love the eBay ad below the picture:

Think it'll apply on this buy? If yes, and there are a few Titans forgotten in a corner we're all set, we'll get the cash by then.
