Political Opinions / Re: Bin Laden is Dead
« on: May 03, 2011, 06:58:23 AM »
Guys, I made an error. I meant to name this thread "Bin Laden is NOT dead".

I watched a press conference yesterday where John Brennan talked about the operation. He spoke very well. He was calm. He knew just how much to say and when not to say anything. He did it with tact. However, I noticed a shift in his demeanor/non verbal when the whole "burial at sea" came up. It was like he wanted to get that part to go away, but on the other hand he didn't want to rush it because it would look odd.

As he spoke, the idea the US could have Bin Laden in custody while everyone thinks he's dead became a posibility I had to consider. Utilising the muslim law to justify a quick disposal of the body, and conviently opting for a burial at sea, where no body could ever be extracted by anyone, was pure brilliance. Imagine for a second that you have a man held up somewhere that no one knows about. He has no rights. No protections. No nothing. No body is seeking him out. He's just completely defensless. If they want to torture him, they can. If they want to suck his dick, they can. He'd have zero control over his life. What a shit life that would be. I think this is a real possibility. How could we ever know? This is something they could arrange without too much effort under the circumstances of this particular operation. Unless they release clear evidence of his death, this will always be in the back of my mind. DNA match confirms they have him. It does not confirm if he is dead or alive.

Now let' slook at the bigger picture. I've shares similar views before so this might be a boring read for some of you!

Forget this whole Bin Laden thing. He is one man. Sure, a powerfull influencual man, but his organisation is based on hatred and the will of his God. His death only fuels this and his followers will be even more determined in the long run. This is just a short term blow. When governement officials state that "Al Qaeda is a thing of the past", that's an attempt at utilizing the power of media to demoralise them further. It's a message that the US governement wants to spread. And frankly, I find it idiotic. Today it's called Al Qaeda, tomorrow it will be something else.

How about we get down the the root cause of all this bullshit: Religion. I hate the idea of organised religion in general. While some aspects of religion are positive, religious systems have been the cause of many wars and acts of unimaginable cruelty througout history. When I was young, I was raised to beleive a certain system. It is only when I was older that I truely questioned my faith, something that I was programmed not to do because that's how that system is designed. In doing so, and in studying other religions, my eyes were opened. I realized what the most plausible reasons for religion to exist is: it is a man made fabrication designed to control behaviors. It's a intricate belief system in many ways, yet so simple in others. It is an extremly well designed and that's why we can't seem to shake it off.

Men will kill in the name of a God. Bin Laden is just one of them. I don't know if he truely beleives it, or if he consciously uses the system to manipulate others to do his bidding, what ever his true motives are. It's irrelevant. Either way, religion is the source of his power. Devotes will make significant comitements, personal sacrifices, even give up their own lives because they are driven by faith. There will never be global peace for as long as there is blind faith.

My take on it is simple. It's one thing to believe something. It's another to impose those beliefs on others. Ironically, in making that statement I'm trying to convince you of something. The difference is I can accept that you may not agree. That's the line I don't cross.

Recently, two Jehova's Witnesses came knocking at my door trying to sell me their bullshit. I asked this: "I like peperoni pizza. I think it's the best kind of pizza a person can get. There's a lot of different kinds of pizzas out there, but peperoni is the best as far as I'm concerned. Should I go knock at your door and try to shove a slice down your throat?" I have a problem with force feeding. Honestly, I pitty those individuals who fell victim to the system. What a waste of their existence.

The US is as worse as the Middle East by the way. The US has often been described to be an arrogant nation. I disagree. The US is a christian nation, and their leaders make decisions based on personal faith. They impose their belief system, because that's how the system works. Most of them are compeltely blind to this. They don't even realize that this is happening so in that sense it's not arrogance but ignorance. Religion and governement is very meshed.

My distaste for religion grew even stronger when I developed an interest in astronomy a few years ago. When I began studying the universe, concepts of parallel universe, of 10 dimensions, of time, pre big bang theories, and other things, it was then that I realized what few of us accept to aknowlegde: We are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

I could write a whole lot about this, and how I came to that conclusion. I'll stick with the religion bashing for now . For as long as their have been civilisations, there have been Gods. Why would Jesus suddenly be "the one" out of all of them? (Or his father I should say). Why would Allah be the one? Why do people base their entire "code of conduct" upon stories that cannot be verified, validated, and are in all likeliness a fabrication, or perhaps distorted and missintepretted tale. It just baffles me that this level of ignorance is still so wide spread across the world, including modern society. What will it take for people to snap out and realise that:

1. They were raised to beleive something so they beleive it
2. Those beliefs require that you transmit such beliefs to the next generation
3. Those beliefs rely heavilly on guilt and on fear, and offer promisses of reward
4. Most people cling to these beliefs because it's convenient

Let me explain my last point, then I'm done ranting! lol

Let's take christianity for example. Why do people become "members" of a religious community, other than the first three points I mentioned? Because the blind faith satisfies a very basic need. Death is pretty much a significant components of most religions. How many simply "believe" that there is life after death? Most of us are not comfortable with the unknowns of death. It's convenient to believe that it doesn't "end" here. Being part of the religious system fills that basic "need to exist". But no one can deny that we just don't know. All we can do is make a choice to beleive or not to beleive. It's the only kind of control we have, and it's very artificial. A smart person cannot ignore the possibility that it may just end, and there is nothing else. Most people cannot accept that possibility because it means their life has no purpose. Guess what? That could be the case.

That is why religion is such a powerful and dangerous tool. People will do horrible things in the name of faith because they temselves REFUSE to acknowledge the possibility (and probability) that we are simply irrelevant.

Take away the blind faith, and you take away the power that is wielded by people like Bin Laden, Bush, and so many others. In my eyes, they are both guilty of the same thing. There is no such thing as absolute right or wrong in this world. It is purely relative and where you stand depends on where you sit.

So, that should bring interesting discussions. What do you think about the news? How will it change things, if it does? I guess that makes a few brownie points for Obama. I wonder what kind of retalliation attempts we'll see.

They're back up now Detta. But they won't take bets from US players any more. I have many business associates that promote online poker and this will really set them back. Imagine when you have deals in place were you get a percentage of the rake generated by each player, and 80% of your players are US based. That means overnight, your income drops by 80%. Some of these folks were self employed and now they'll need to look for a day job. It's real bummer.

I'm a bug Trumo fan, but I don't think he can handle governement. Having worked in governemnt myself for over 10 years, there's so much legislation and procedures he'll never adapt to it, and he'll never get the system to change. He'll be completely out of his element if he goes there, and he thinks he knows what he's getting himself into, but the thing with Trump is he sued to calling the shots. He speaks his mind when most would keep quiet. It is both his strenght and weakness. On the international front, he's probably going to mess things up. But what the hell, they're fucked up already anyway I supose.

38
That's certainly what some governement officials would have you beleive. It is a known fact that there are such operations and this is just another arguement for regulating this industry. However, the industry is missrepresented. There are many legitimate operations out there, including some public companies who's stock is being traded on open europeean markets.

Here's some context

2006 - Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) passes. This act is misinterpreted by government and by the public. Without getting into details, the bottom line of this act is that it strengthens existing gambling related laws and primarily targets the processing of financial transactions relating to gambling. This makes it more difficult for poker rooms offering services to US players, but not impossible. Some poker rooms decided to leave the US market (Party Poker for example) while others stuck around because of the lucrative market. In order to circumvent some US laws, gambling companies operated from offshore accounts, and many created a series of fake business as a way to get payments through without raising red flags from financial institutions which are really nervous about processing gambling transactions, thanks to the UIGEA.

Between then and now, there have been a few incidents where some poker rooms have gone rogue, although this is not a new problem. By going rogue, I mean they take everyone's money, close shop, and run away with millions. For some, it’s just another argument for the need regulate online gambling.

France regulated online gambling a year ago or so, meaning they now take tax on a portion of the rake generated by the poker rooms. The "rake" is the small percentage that the room takes from every pot played, just like a land based casino. Also last year, the Canadian province of British Columbia launched their own online gambling platform (via BC lottery). This is different because the government isn’t taxing a service offered by a third party, they’re actually running the business. While I am a supporter of safe online gambling, if I was a BC tax payer, I would have a big problem with this approach. Not to mention they were getting involved in an industry they had no experience with, and there was a major system crash on the initial launch.

In terms of the legal history, there’s a good summary at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_gambling. Scroll down to the US section. Wow! There’s more content there than all the other countries combined! lol

A significant debate has to do with defining if poker is a game of skill or a game of chance, because that really defines which US laws are applicable and which are not. There have been a few court rulings that are in favour of online gamblers, and some that are not. So it’s still being worked out in the system and that takes time. However, there seems to be a trend that could lead the US to re-enter the market. The big players in Las Vegas are certainly interested in pursuing this venture. Particularly the Harrah’s. Some even speculated that the latest move by the department of Justice in seizing control of the domains I posted above was in fact intended to cripple these companies to allow for an eventual entry of Las Vegas Casinos on the US online gambling market.

There has been interesting development in the last few days. It appears that PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker have made a deal with the US government. Their top priority is to ensure US players are able to cash out their funds. They have regained control of their domains. They are ceasing the operations in the US, for now at least. That’s very significant as 30% of PokerStars business is from US players. Full Tilt is even worse at 50%. The Cereus network (Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker) haven’t taken the deal yet, although it is on the table. It will be interesting to see what they end up doing.

It was also interesting to see the marketing strategy used by other poker rooms to take advantage of the situation. Many of them, targeting non US players, sent out emails to inactive players using scare tactics to urge them return claiming that their funds at Full Tilt and Pokerstars may be in jeopardy, that the future of those companies was uncertain, etc. They reiterated that their own operations were 100% legit, and had never taken bets from US players, thus didn’t face the legal risks and financial pressures that could bring the others down quickly. If you’re in the industry, you know this was mostly BS, but it was smart too. While this does damage PokerStars and Full Tilt, it won’t bring them down.

The whole situation however does lead me to believe that there will be interesting changes coming up in the US. Within a year or two, I would expect to see a taxation model in place, with online poker being legal. Well… technically, it is already legal. It’s the processing of financial transactions around it that is the issue but that will likely go away once the US government figures out the best way to get their cut. All I can say is they better get their act together sooner than later because they are missing out on massive revenue, and fighting it has not worked.

Two large spiral staircases hugged the circular walls of the room and led to the second level. The walls were made of dark stone and the sound of rushing water was echoing throughout the room. At the top where stairwells joined was a large sculpture of an elephant’s head overlooking the area from the second floor. In fact, the two railings of the staircases were cleverly constructed to appear as the elephant’s tusk. Looking up, the sculpture’s trunk reached out above Jim’s head and curved to the right. A stream of water flew out from it across 10 feet in the air, where it hit a large fountain wall. The water then trickled down a stony mural and made its way into a large basin that was embedded into the wall, a few feet above ground level. The basin was finished with natural stone, grass, dirt and sand. It felt like you were standing next to a real brook. Jim had never seen anything like this massive fountain in his life.

Identical hallways to the left and to the right led to closed double doors. A large archway under the elephant head revealed a larger room up a head. Jim started walking in that direction. There was a large stone fireplace to the right. It was unlit. A glass wall to the left revealed an interior pool on the other side. Magnificent carpets adorned the floor and there were some wall carpets hanging on the farthest wall, also made of stone. Alongside fo them were some very large abstract paintings that couldn’t do anything but draw in Jim’s gaze. The room was furnished with exquisite marble tables and leather furniture, including a large L shape sofa. There was another room further up, and a hallway to the far right. The ceiling was at least 12 feet high and has multiple large wooden beams that crossed from the ceiling from end to end.

As Jim approached the large sofa, he noticed an envelope on a marble coffee table. It had his name on it. He picked it up and opened it. There was a letter inside. It read:

Jimmy Boy,
Today I am offering you more than you could ever dream of. This house is now your house, but I can take it away just as easily as I gave it to you. That pool behind you can be yours. Everything you see on this property can be yours. You might want to take a peak in the garage later…

I have work for you. Very unique work.  You’ll start tomorrow. Be at the 9th hole of the Weston Golf and Country Club at precisely 9:00 am. Walk up to the green, directly to the flag. Stand exactly one foot away from the hole. Look down into the hole  and wait. You’ll find a guess pass that will grant you entry to the club.  The required golf equipment and attire can be found in the closet of the exercise room.

I give you one warning, and one warning only: There is no turning back. If you accept to work for me, the spoils you will experience are nothing compared to what this house represents. You can consider this a tax free sign up bonus. You’ve had a true life lesson on the front porch earlier this evening. That lesson is the key to all of this so I do hope for your sake that you managed to grasp its true meaning. You have the power to tap into your anger. I need you to embrace this power. It’s time to put your days of being a pussy whipped nerd behind and make you a God amongst the living. It’s time for you to change the world.

If you think this isn’t your cup of tea, then simply walk away in the morning and never return.

Yours truly,

J
