New Computer!
« on: November 02, 2004, 08:11:24 PM »

So the laptank sold, and after tapping into some other financial resources I finally bought my beast:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
ASUS K8T800 Chipset mobo
2x512 Corsair PC3200 in Dual Channel mode
PNY GeForce 6800 GT
Lian Li PC-V1200 Case

Other parts ignored because they aren't impressive.

And I KNOW my case is seriously overpriced, but I'm sick of cheap ass cases. It's time to buy me one that will last.

Anyone think I could have done better price/performance?  (no, old, free computers do not count)

Now to wait for it to ship....

A big performance booster that many people over look when putting together a new computer is the speed of the hard drive(s) that are in the system. A 15,000 RPM Ultra 320 SCSI hard drive would make a noticeable difference when it came to booting up and read/writing data.

Personally, I have never tried on of the WD Raptor drives, but from what I have heard they are pretty good, and the pricing for them has come down over the past year. It might be worth the extra 30 dollars or so to go with one of them for your system drive if you don't want to spend upwards of 300 or more to go SCSI.

Thank you for NOT bashing a good system because it doesn't exactly meet your personal preference.  I've always had intels until the past year.  AMDs have been impressing me more and more, so I figured I owe them a try.  Been very happy with my server's OCd 2500+ mobile so far, so no reason to stop there.

I do miss hyperthreading though.  :(

Anyway, yeah, I got some good loans to pay off this summer, but I'm really looking forward to making that 6800 GT go whizzzzzzzz!

If you live anywhere near PA, Upstate NY, or NH, come one of my LAN parties sometime and you can play with it.

I know how big of a difference it can make, but I really needed to cut costs somewhere.  I would love to have a damn fast bootdisk so windows just goes POP!

Oh well...  Maybe with the next upgrade.  8)

I live in Wisconsin, but if I am ever in the area someday I will keep that in mind. :)

Yeah, I like the rest of the specs. The fact that you like NVIDIA alone is enough to make me like ya. What is your AIM/ICQ/anything? We should talk about... stuff. lol

You are lucky.
I got my comp. for free from H&R Block (my mother works there) but it is a piece of poopy. It works like crap, goes slow (not as slow, nate gave me 128 free  megs of ram, Nate I love you), has a crap vid card (screen always changes colors cause of it), but it does have a nice monitor. A 17in. IBM. It is decent. I want a doulbe 20 in. monitor though.

See, I grew up on ATI, but recently I have been very impressed with nVidia, so I have decided that it is time to put aside the hassle of getting my ATI cards to perform the way they should and hop into one of the beastliest nVidia cards out there (that I have used first-hand and loved) that also gives me a huge bang for its buck.

I'm ho0ber everywhere man.  Aim... etc.  So if I use it,  I am "Ho0ber" no matter what the service is.
