Are you looking for projects for the sake of exercising your 1337 skills?

I ask because I have some ideas that probably wouldn't benefit the community but would be cool to play with.

I dont' know if there is a mod out there for this, but I know I always get confused by who's what gender. Especially with Lacreda. I am wondering if this info can be reflected in the profile, and then a small icon with the male/female sign would appear just above or below the KArma points, or something like that.

How about "whisper" and "snark" tags.

whisper = [whisper name="Chris"]Only chris can see this[/whisper]
snark = [snark name="Chris"]Everyone can see this except Chris[/snark]

How about make everyone a mod just like somewhere else.  Maybe it'll catch on here.

The "IM" button image indicates if a person is online or not.  Also, if you mouse over it, it tells you.

I ask because I have some ideas that probably wouldn't benefit the community but would be cool to play with.

I'm basically just looking for ways to make these forums and the community better. When I say "better" I mean by making the forums have more features that everyone wants, and by making the community more "tight-nit" (and larger) than it is now, but by still keeping things in control and the content to reasonably good quality levels.

So if you have a feature idea or an idea to benifit the community in those ways, shoot. I'm willing to hear your ideas on the subject matter.

This is already a field in user's profiles, so a mod for this is sure to exist. Though, making it active on all themes would be a pain if it isn't cross-theme compatible. That brings up another question for another topic further down the road: Should there only be two themes? One 'dark' theme, and one 'light' theme.

I think the gender is a good idea. There's nothing worse than hitting on someone you think to be a girl, and then sadly find out it's really a guy.

This idea reminds me of the ignore feature that is built in to Vbulletin. There is indeed an ignore mod for SMF, though I'm not sure of the versions it covers. If it's for this current version, you can expect to see it within the next week or so.

I know for sure this mod exists for SMF. I'm assuming you mean "Online" and "Offline" as in "The user is currently browsing these forums" and not "The user is currently signed on AIM or ICQ", right?

This is already active (on my theme anyway, maybe not all themes have it).

Speaking of themes, I think you should liit yourself to two. If you want to mod this board, it's going to be a pain in the ass to do so with too many themes.

Yes by online I meant by browsing the forums not on ICQ etc etc.  I'll try the theme Judge is using to see if it makes a difference...

I'm leaning towards just two themes. What theme on the light side do you guys like the most?

As Judge stated, getting some mods to work on multiple themes is a pain in the ass.

How about setting up something to display our Netflix queue/at-home list?  They do provide xml.

Queue http://rss.netflix.com/QueueRSS?id=P8808804484179508019854371821305818
Recent Activity http://rss.netflix.com/TrackingRSS?id=P8808804484179508019854371821305818
At home http://rss.netflix.com/AtHomeRSS?id=P8808804484179508019854371821305818

Cool! I didn’t know they had feeds.  :-o

That would be a good application for that article I wrote on HaXor Central (r.i.p.) about creating dynamic signature  images from xml feeds. Since the feeds don’t change too frequently, the script could easily be executed via cron to limit server load.

If anyone is interested, I could post the article. Although the code is setup to parse an SMF feed, it shouldn’t be too difficult to modify…

Chris, do you plan to intergrate the forum within mambo?

I have thought about it, but am not sure if I ever really want to do it. I guess I'm concerned about meesing things up at this point because the forum database has gotten pretty large.

Another thing I'm kind of weary about is how updates can/would be installed if I used a bridge between the two applications.

It's defiantly something that I have thought of, though.

Maybe what you can do is create a copy a the forum in a new folder, and test it with that copy.

If you want to give that a try, you should upgrade to SMF 1.1 RC3 prior to insatlling the bridge

Since we're having another minor invasion of stupid on this forum, I propose creating a new subform called "The Special Needs Center" where banned or otherwise really annoying posters could be exiled to. They could post like regular but restricted to only in this area. All the other areas are off limits to them. We'd need to appoint a tard-herder, of course, if things get really bad. This would provide us with, quite possibly, limitless hours of entertainment watching them sling crap at each other.

And none of us could post in that forum except the herder, and the herder can change to another regular on a weekly basis.
