You raise a very interesting point. To be fair and consitent, perhaps the government should cease all dependent related tax benefits. The more I think about it, the more that makes sense. If I am an American single playboy with significant income and no dependents, why should a portion of the taxes I pay be used to relief those who choose to surround themselves with losers who can't hold a job? That's pretty unfair to me really.

I'll go out on a limb and say that's not role-playing for me. That is truly how I feel. I didn't put in the effort to be sucessful so that I could pay for other peoples' shitty decisions. Now, hypothetically, if my sister becomes one of those people and I choose to take her on as a dependent, that should be my choice. However, I shouldn't be forced to subsidize a whole bunch of people (who I don't know) that can't seem to make a decent decision.

One cannot forget that the value of the deduction is allways far less than the actual cost of said support. Surrounding oneself with unemployed loosers is still a net loss even if a deduction is allowed. It couldn't be construed as a reward system by any stretch.

Life throws curves here and there and if we choose to keep a relative/friend/[whatever] off the streets we may well be actually saving tax-paying-society greater expense(s).
