How do you stay motivated?
« on: October 26, 2007, 03:13:47 PM »

One of my biggest problems is that I have a hard time finishing what I start. I'll start something, get totally into it like crazy for a time, then just BAM lose interest entirely. I don't get why it happens, but it happens alot. What tricks do you do to stay focused and motivated?

Sorry, I could only read through "a hard time fin" before I got interested in something else.

Yeah, I'm exactly the same.  With coding projects it takes me ages to find inspiration to do something, when I finally do, I'll think of nothing else for a few days, then I'll just loose interest.  It's not even like I find something else to do, I get distracted by nothing, quite annoying.

No answers for you though, sorry! =P

The anwser, quite simply, is that's you're lazy.

*runs*

Actually, I'm the same way for a lot of things. When things get to be routine, I get bored. In the context of your work, I think the trick is to approach a project in phases as opposed to looking ta it globally. Once a global plan is established, then you can focus your attention and efforts on specific tasks for the pahse you're into, and not think so much about the rest. Hopefully when things start getting boring, the next phase is aroud the corner and it can feel like you're doing something new and different. I also accept that there are elements in my work that are boring. There's nothing I can do to change that, but that also doesn't mean that such elements aren't important. In fact, they are often critical. So I try to remind myself of the importance of a task and that motivates me temporarily. (long enough to focus and get it done so I can move on).

I need to set deadlines personally.

If I'm under no pressure to get something done I probably won't do it.  So in my job if things are slow I'll set deadlines, or if you have a good boss tell them you need deadlines and they'll do it.  In my personal life I try to use positive reinforcement training.  If something needs doing I can't do something "fun" until I finish.  Completely finish.  It works for training dogs so I figured I'd give it a shot for myself and it does pretty good.   I can't watch the game until I fix the toilet, etc.

A lot of it just seems to be learning how you work and how to motivate yourself.  Everyone's different.

Get a new job, that way everything will be novel and you won't even notice your ADD/ADHD/AADD/AADHD/Procrastination/OCD.  It's worked for me for a whole week now.

Sometimes, procrastination actually works for me.  I sometimes work better under pressure.  That aside, set up your work so you have multiple things to do at once.  Work on one thing for a while, then switch, and so on, like TheJudge said earlier.  If you have a lot of time to finish multiple tasks, including breaks to re-evaluate how much work you've finished and clear your head can't hurt.  I personally like to make lists.  Something about crossing stuff off with a Sharpie I guess.

Get a position in management... that way you can pay people to get bored in your stead, and you can go play golf and drink martinis all afternoon.

I agree with the judge here...and to be honest sometimes you just have to figure out what's going to work for you, all on your own.  Another interesting thing is taking a personality test.  Sounds cliche' but if you answer honestly it can at the very least open your eyes to some new perspectives on how you handle life.  I'm not talking about some garbage e-mode half ass test either, take the Myers-Briggs.

Hello danadane!
We have a tradition here of requiring new members of the forum to create an introduction thread in the Newbie forum.  Please take the time to create one for yourself and tell us a little about you.  The Newbie forum is a flame-free area, the other areas... not so much.

The drama isn't necessary.  Courtesy is.

Believe me, usually we're far more harsh on people that barge in without bothering to read first.  Especially BizB.  So don't get your undies in a bundle.

This maybe a little late, but how about a dry-erase board in an easy to see area that has a "To do" list on it this way it's there until you finish it. I personally like to keep lists of things that I have to get done and then cross them off when I'm done. I don't really feel 'complete" until it's done.
