Weird sound issue
« on: December 10, 2009, 06:19:22 PM »

Hello everyone, new guy here. I built a new (nothing fancy) rig within the last six months and have a very odd problem that I have been unable to solve.

Out of all the hardware parts, the rig includes a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P with GeForce GTX260, spin point tera-byte, dvd burner and a blueray rom. I am using HDMI connection which goes to my 1080p 46 inch LCD Vizio.

Here is the problem, when my Windows 7 (beta) logs-in, I hear the Windows log-in sound through the HDMI cable to my TV and it's speakers. If I use DVD shrink or firefox to play a video, it plays the audio with no problem.

However, there are some applications which will not play sound. I can see video, but no sound. If I use PowerDVD to play same movie as I did using DVD Shrink, I hear no sound. If I use Arcsoft media to play from my Blueray drive, it doesn't play sound either. Are these 'higher-end' applications using a different decoder that I don't have?

What am I missing? Is there some specific setting that I didn't turn on via Bios or Software? I have been battling this for more than six months and cannot figure it out. Help! Please!!

I've seen this too many times to count. The problem is simple, but unsolvable. You see, Win7 is not a true 64-bit app -- it's actually a 63.1024 bit app. This has the OS crowd all in a tizzy, and rightly so. Now you have to code everything to work not just on 64/32 bit systems, but 63.1024 bit systems as well. Another example of MicroShaft at work.

Anyway, good luck.

Fractional bits were developed by MI6 for use in encryption technology, but abandoned because they are just too dangerous. MicroScam gobbled up the distribution rights and have been using them to some extent in every product beginning with Windows 1.0. Some people blame MicroScoff's product's notorious undependability on their use. They're playing with fire in the name of greed. Fractional bits are also suspected of having caused Y2K.

Ok, maybe I'm being a bit unfair. (Ha-ha -- a "bit" unfair -- get it?) It's not necessarily greed. Perhaps Mr. Gates was motivated by a sincere desire to advance the technology. And fractional bits do have a substantial advanage over whole bits. This isn't often noted, but standard computer memory can only store whole numbers. Fractions have to be represented by a combination of a number register and a decimal point register. So, for instance, the number 5 would be stored as (5,0), 5 in one register and the number of decimal places (0) in another. Accordingly, the number 5.1 is stored as (51,1), and the number 5.123 is stored as (5123,3). With the advent of fractional bits, any number can be stored in just one register, effectively doubling your memory. So far, so good. But the problem occurs when the unused portion of the fractional bits is improperly managed. They tend to drift out of their original memory cell into adjoining cells, causing what is called a "memory leak". This can result in a battery of problems, from the familiar BSOD to the more rare but potentially deadly CPU explosions. Little-known fact -- the Linux mascot, the cute little penguin, is a sly Monty-Python reference that directly mocks the exploding CPU bug.

I can go on.

I meant on a more basic level. a bit is, to my knowledge, either a 1 or a 0. either the electron is there or it isn't. unless you happen to have a quantum computer, which I doubt.

I just finished installing a Linux distro on my toaster. It's pretty cool. I can put bread in it, run upstairs to my laptop, log in via SSH and use vi to edit the howilikemytoast.cfg file for the app I coded then run the app to start toasting. Sometimes the bread gets stuck and I have to go down and pry it out with a fork and replace the bread and start over. (That's why it's call 'forking a new process')

This ranks right up there with the C&H where Calvin's dad is explaining black and white photos.
