Topic: Need Latin Help (Read 3280 times)

Okay, I give up...the online Latin to English translators I'm finding aren't telling me what I need to know. Here's the latin phrase:

Domitus ergo sumus

Here's what I need to know: Does that translate cleanly to 'We conquer therefore we are'? OR, does that contain an error that someone will point out and laugh at?

Kinda depends on the context, but roughly translated it's kind of a sentence fragment meaning "... therefore God exists".

I would translate it as something like "God is, therefore we are."

I don't understand where you guys are getting the God reference. From everything I've found, domitus is a conjugation of domare, which appears to roughly translate to 'to tame' or 'to subdue'

Domitus? Or are you thinking "Dominus", which means "lord"?

I think it's more, "we subdue (or tame, or dominate), therefore we are."

I'm trying to use 'domitus'. That's why I was wondering where the 'god' part of it came in.

Whoops, my bad. Reading comprehension fail. I was reading that as "dominus".

But the same questions still apply about whether the conjugation is okay.

I also thought Dominus, probably because of Demo. As in Anno Domini.

At the translator I found here

putting in your latin of 'Domitus ergo sumus'
gets 'To tame on account of are'

and 'victus ergo sumus'
gets 'victuals on account of are'

putting in 'We conquer therefore we are'
gets 'Nos victum proinde nos es'

You want "Vincimus ergo sumus."

Latin verb root: "vincire", literally, "I bind (tie up, restrain, surround), therefore I am." It's the third part of "Veni, vidi, vici", in which case it essentially means "conquer" or "subjegate."
