Is anyone into backyard astronomy?
« on: February 28, 2011, 02:21:36 PM »

I bought a telescope a year and a half ago. I enjoyed it so much I decided to sell telescopes online. Now I am looking for writers. While I do enjoy the hobby, I'm no expert. My experience is limited. I hate the cold so I don't go out in the winter! Anyway, I don't mean to pimp out the site here, but it's a pretty geeky hobby so I figured some of you may be into it. Give me a shout if you are.

I bought a telescope for $5 at a garage sale a few years back, but haven't really used it.  So I can't really write about it.  That said, I've got $5 invested in backyard astronomy, so I'd be interested in reading content on your site.

Well, I don't know how good that telescope will be, but I'll send you the link. I actually have a lot of info for beginers. If you have questions, drop me a PM or write on the site's  Facebook wall and I'll help you out.

I used to have a Jason back in the early 90s. Don't remember the model or power. Saturn was about this size --->O<---, but I could clearly see the rings. I think I saw the red spot on Jupiter. I was able to see tremendous detail on the moon. And then this one time I took my Canon T95 and pointed it straight into the eyepiece and snapped some gorgeous pictures of a full moon.

Yeah, I did the moon snapshot too. Kinda cool. In fact, I still have the picture so I'll attach it.

For those interested, the Orion Nebula is very easy to spot in you're in the northen hemisphere and you dont' even need a telescope. Binoculars will do. Look towards the south at around 9pm and spot the 3 stars that make up Orion's belt. Look below the belt star and you'll see a couple of faint clusters. The nebual is in that area. You should see a fainth glow when you look in that spot. Here's an image of the Orion Constellation. You can see the 3 starts forming the belt in the middle of the picture.

Most of the year, we can see Orion and his belt clearly in the Southern sky, and over to the North, Ursa Major looms huge over the horizon. Those are the two constellations I can reliably spot -- actually, you can't miss them. On a super-clear night, I can locate Ursa Minor.

See, and if more people supported the American people's right to arm bears, we would be living in a polite society where people couldn't commit these degenerate crimes!

I just wanted to say that every time I see this thread I read backyard sodomy. Sorry, it was bothering me - had to be said.

Backyard sodomy only bothers me if it's a surprise.

This is hilarious.  I opened this thread specifically to make a comment about whether 'backyard astronomy' was a euphemism for something.  And I see sodomy jokes.

But rape is.

As a sensitive rapist, this comment makes me really uncomfortable.

It is now!

Now I get why backyard astronomy is more enjoyable when you do it in dark sites.

I even tried to save this topic by redirecting all of the sodomy to a different thread.

Alas, it was to no avail.

As a side note, the phrase "redirected sodomy" sounds like the name of a Soylent Haggis album.

However, at this juncture, I think I will decline to mock up an album cover for that one.

No, though that is quite noble of you.  But you know as well as I do that it was going to go that direction eventually no matter what.   :-D

Haha, thanks. I SOOOO wanted to do a better one, but at the moment I only have access to a computer at work, it only has Paint, and its a brand new work environment for me. I've been here in North Carolina about a week, going to an office with about 50 people; instead of working from home alone. So I just drafted the idea I had.
