Solid State RAM?
« on: February 13, 2009, 03:02:53 AM »

Hello all. New member here. A question occurred to me tonight and I had no idea where to ask it. I Googled "geek forum" and found myself here. I believe I can not post to the "technology x3" forum until I have accumulated 50 posts so I will pose my question in my introduction:

Does anyone remember a few (3-5) years ago when someone (ibm?) was talking about a new expensive type of RAM that would allow users to boot immediately rather than in minutes?

If yes:

What happened to this technology? At the time I was skeptical of its utility. Sometimes my computer needs to reboot. The last thing it needs is a remembering RAM.

Is it possible this technology jumped over the RAM application and is what we now know as solid state hard drives? Or are these drives the 'cheap' version of that technology?

I look forward to reading your responses.

Chet.

So you see, chestertime -- you always had the ability to find this out. All you have to do is click your heels 3 times and repeat, "There's no place like Google. There's no place like Google. There's no place like Google."

You know, the tech forum has a 50 post minimum for a reason.  We don't like twats popping up here out of the blue, asking for help, and then being pissy about the answers they receive.  We're very cranky people.

Can I show up in your dining room tonight and complain about what you've made for dinner?

Your google foo is REALLY weak.  I just typed - Solid State Ram - into the search box at that Google place and 12ax7's link was 7th on the list.  More important, this link was 5th in the return.  Had you bothered to actually read and understand what Solid State Ram really is - in today's terminology - you'd understand why Demo's link was actually quite on target.

awwww snap.

Dude, awesome attitude for people who were just tyring to help out.

Well, if Demo's link is a problem, try this one.

It was 100% relevant and exactly on target.  You just used incorrect terms.  ALL ram is "solid state".

What you are referring to is solid state hard drives, and I linked a Google search that should give you mountains of information about them.

I see no reason why you *couldn't* have non-SS RAM.  A magnetic HD with heads and platters *could* do the same job.

I don't see how you'd be able to fit a large amount of data on something like that. Maybe a better idea would be, say, a reel of magnetic tape that can be read by a single stationary head. Fewer movable parts = more reliable, and you can make the reel as big as you want.

?
we have Terabyte hard drives, you know.

I wasn't saying it was a good idea, just that not all RAM necessarily be solid state.  A reel is by definition not Random Access.

You should have just gone for the vacuum tubes and mercury.

MAGTAPERAM is by definition a joke.

But then, HDRAM is also kind of a joke.

I mean, the benefit of RAM is zero latency due to mechanical motion.
