Wellness
« on: October 02, 2007, 04:33:06 PM »

Every morning, I hear Liz Bonis, who has a one minute snipit on the radio, on my way to work.  She tells me awesome things, like that the research shows that eating kale reduces the risk of cancer dramatically.  I figure I'll try to share what she says each day.  I won't have all the details that she gives because I can't write it down.

Today she said that mushrooms are really good for you.  They did research where they put mushrooms on cells and it helped the fighter cells get more fight, which is good against viruses (some that cause cancer).

I don't like mushrooms though.  I'm not sure how I can incorporate that into my diet.  Well...whenever a recipe calls for mushrooms, I usually just leave them out.  But I think from now on that I will puree them up so that I get the taste and the benefits but not the texture of it.

This weekend, I made stuffed shells with mozzarella, ricotta, egg and chopped up kale.  It was really good!

I've had mushrooms with coke, mushrooms with doctor pepper, mushrooms shoved into a burger, mushrooms shoved into a brownie, and mushrooms on a cookie to great effect!

I heard a commercial earlier for a diet pill with shitaki mushrooms in it. Personally I cant take the texture either (feels like eating dirt pies). What I do is get the cream of mushroom soup for any recipe that calls for them. The smaller those little pieces the better.

You're talking magic mushrooms, aren't you? =P

I'm the same as you, Detta, I hate the texture of mushrooms, but could probably live with the taste. Had a slice of pizza last week with mushrooms on it, wasn't as bad as I'd have made out if I was sober =P

Even the cream of mushroom soup recipes, I usually wind up shoving the mushrooms aside.

I did make a chicken potpie the other week though.  It called for an entire jar of mushrooms.  I put them in the food processor for a bit before adding them and didn't notice them at all.

One of my favourite cream of mushroom soup recipes:

One can cream of mushroom
One can cream of celery
One can of water
Giant can of tuna
One small can of peas

Put it together and heat up.  Serve over rice.  Quick, easy, delicious, nutritious.  Tuna is the only fish that I'll eat so I try to eat it often.  Fish is also very good for you.

Are you talking about ANY form of mushroom? Or just the slimy kind? Sometimes I get a ...box? of mushrooms and eat them plain. (not the whole box; just a few) But these aren't slimy; they're fresh-picked ... about the same texture as much other fresh veggies.

Hate all mushrooms.  Sugar snap peas are wonderful though.  I grow them each year.

She said even those white button mushrooms.  I don't know what that means though.

That's them. Button mushrooms. They come in a cardboard "box" with no top; just plastic wrap over em. They're still dirty, so they have to be washed off before eating, but the texture is like any other fresh vegetable. The ones in a can or jar I can understand an aversion to eating. Those are the "slimy" ones. Buttons are fresh, dry, firm, and whole. And TASTY! :)
Of course, I like liver, too, so .  .  .   consider me "eww".

Also, did you guys hear about the new pill they invented to satisfy thirst? Apparently this is the ultimate thirst quencher and it's in pill format. People say it really works. You have to take it with seven glasses of water. OMFGLOL!!111

Researchers say that 75% of Americans will be overweight by the year 2015 and that 40% of us will be obese.  They contribute this to the fact that people are moving to the suburbs.  When people lived in cities, they walked everywhere.  But now that everyone's moving to the suburbs, there's no walking going on and that needs to be replaced by some other activity each day if we are going to avoid what the researchers fear.

8 minutes of vigorous exercise followed by 12 minutes of moderate exercise burns more fat than 40 minutes of moderate exercise.
