"Geek" has a connotation of being out of the mainstream. There are millions of programmers in every town all over the world, and even more gamers, and even more people proud of their ability to apply heat to protein. How does any of that make anyone a geek?

I think it is just the sticking stereotype that come from the 80s and into the mid 90s where computers and programing was seen as geeky or nerdy. It has lost the meaning of being on the outside and grown into a culture all of its own.

And there is no functional reason for the loud clicking. I think IBM feared the new-fangled keyboards would seem alien to all us former Selectric users.

Right now, as I'm typing, it sounds like the canned linotype sound at the beginning of a cheesy newscast.

Yup.  Loved that!  I learned how to type on my parents' selectric.  Wonderful machine.  Those were certainly built to last.  I wonder if they still have it.
