Am I lost
« on: February 27, 2008, 07:36:34 PM »

Hi, signed up thinking i might get some pc help here, looking at the forum index i cant see where to post.

my pc is cutting out.

I've already deducted that its a hardware problem, It shouldnt be the harddrive as ive just installed a working drive from another pc, so im geussing either motherboard or ram.

I dont know how to test the ram and as i am using my pc im geussing the motherboard is fine, isnt there a battery somewhere on the motherboard that may need replacing? i've had this pc for over two years now.

any help will be gratefully recieved.

4. This is not a forum dedicated to hacking or technical support to help you troubleshoot your computer problems because your son downloaded too much porn. Don't sign up thinking that you can post your compuiter related problems and you'll receive help without giving back to the community first. Most of us have lives.

Fair enough, Iv'e signed up to the wrong forum then, i was under the belief that this was a place to get help, my apologies.

Good point! I was attempting to ascertain whether we are, indeed, dealing with a computer, and not with an automobile or a sofa-bed.

You'd probably have fewer disasters at work if you stopped stealing rivets from the support beams.

I'll help you if you help me first.  I've got VMWare Server v1.0.4 running on my laptop (a Dell XPS M1330 running Slackware current, kernel 2.6.23.12-smp).  I can't attach a virtual sound device to my virtual machines, however, because it can't detect my sound card on the host machine.

By default, VMWare Server looks to /dev/dsp for host sound devices, which is normally a symlink to /dev/sound/dsp or /dev/snd/dsp.

However, neither of those things exist in /dev (well, /dev/snd exists, but there's no "dsp" there to link to), so there's no symbolic link called /dev/dsp.

So what /dev location is sound actually working through?  Sound on the laptop works great, but VMWare can't figure out how, and I can't either.

Sounds like a problem with the AC adapter.

Wait... the laptop was made in Britain right? Cause if not then it's a totally different problem all together.

*cue everyone* "It's a totally different problem."

I'll bring it up at the next meeting.

Although I gotta say, rivet-stealing is pretty much part of the corporate culture here.
