What are the main story types??
« on: September 16, 2006, 03:20:39 PM »

This may belong in my other post  but I wanted to make it its own post.

I either read or heard somewhere that there are 6 main types of stories in the world and all stories are based off the concepts of those main types. (BTW, I read comics) After some thinking about this and thinking about all the comics I've read and skimming through the book on upcoming stuff I think I agree with this. All the stories from video games, books, comics, etc seem to be based off a very basic plot.

So far my list is:

      Love story
      Betrayl / Revenge
Quest(hero kills monster, hero has to save or get something)
      Theme type(horror, comedy, crime, etc)
      Wrongfully accused
      History of something
      Finding yourself(possibly part of quest)

Those are the better ones of the ones I got. Think of all the stories and things that have stories. Get back to the very root of the plot, guy loves girl, guy saves town, outcast seeks revenge......

Do you know of any others that could work on the list as I'm sure there are more.

Also, on a side note, which do you think makes for the best type of story?? Personally I probably favour the revenge with a touch of finding yourself as it sets up the villian and gives sympathy to the revenge seeker and makes it easier to connect with them. Thats just me though.

You forgot tragedy. An example being Romeo And Juliet.

I suppose you have a point with tradegy.  I just figured that tradegy is like "the plot twist" kind of thing.

Like Romeo is a love story, just has a bad ending.  I can see how someone can set out to make just a tradegy story though..

Kudos!  :)

Alot of the stuff Shakespear did was Tragic Downfall type plays. Julius Caesar is another example of a Tragedy.

Tragedy, comedy, romance, and monomyth. These are the four types of stories, everything else boils down into a combination of them.
