Title: Hello all and....the plan!
Post by: Plug 4 on July 20, 2011, 08:32:18 PM
Hey all new to the forum.  I have an idea in my head.

My level of geek would be moderate low.

I know enough to be dangerous.  I am still currently educating myself and this is one of those processes.  Essentially I am building a computer.  From the ground up.  I am doing this both as a learning experience and to fulfill this need.  It was my hope to discuss the process here and get needed advice, knowledge and opinions.  I would have preferred to post this in Technology but as for the post min i figured i would start here, see what response i get then go from there.

So the idea.

I have a nice TV.  I have a decent desktop, but no way to watch on the videos on the computer on the TV.  Now I understand I only need a video card with the correct output for 80 bucks that is serviceable and will do so.  However, I would like to get to the point of having the computer with the below capabilities.  I have a laptop FYI all so this box really needs to have the following capabilities, but don’t need anything else.  Sacrifice things in order to get the best at the best price.

I essentially want to be able to have a box that outputs to the TV easily with a HEALTHY amount of storage space.  Anything I want to watch is online (legally ABC NBC website).  So needs to be able to handle and perform on those websites as well as access storage to play digital copies (once again legal) but of all types.  AVI a must and the like.  Also HD HD HD

Figured best place to start is the brain IE the motherboard.  When researching and shopping, what is important need in the motherboard chip set?

Discuss LOL and if this gets going thank you in advance

Discuss LOL

It's a pretty common term in today's internet-based society. You'd think it would have gone away by now given how long it's been around but it's kind of turned into a joke about itself.

Anyway, I have no freaking idea what you're talking about.

The LOL will never end so long as there are loyal fans who keep the LOL alive in their hearts.

EDIT: I don't know the difference between 'there' and 'their'.

Why does 'there' look weird in that sentence? Fuck the English language. It's like a sick joke.

As an early internet adopter, I am partial to LOL.

Of course, I remember what it originally stood for: Longus Orgium Levitatis, a prolonged orgy of levity. As you probably know, the first incarnation of ARPANET was entirely Latin-based (the lingua franca of the DoD at the time), and was only converted to English when someone finally realized there was no Latin word for "pornography". To be sure, there were many LOLs flying back and forth over teh 64 BAUD modems over that. So yes, LOL, in its current meaning, is a backronym of sorts.

So what was the Latin phrase that BAUD stood for then?

Good question!

There is a lot of confusion regarding this topic, because we're actually talking about two things here:

1) a unit of measure, and

2) an acronym.

1) "Baud", the unit of measure, is named after teleprinter pioneer Jean-Maurice-Émile Baudot, and refers to the number of signal events per second processed by a telecom device.

2) "BAUD", the acronym, stands for Big-Ass Underwear Drawer.

I hope this was meaningful and informative!

Yeah, seriously. I have a hard enough time just holding on to the thing while it's flapping frantically and squeaking like mad... I can't imagine how I could even hit anything with it, let alone hard.

Bats are great unless you're a swinger. You don't want those things hanging around when you have everyone over.
